This chapter has covered the differences between passive and active scanning and why a certain level of hardware and driver support is required for scanning. You have seen that some chipsets are much more useful than others and how to (hopefully) determine what chipset is in a given card before actually buying the card. The basics of choosing an antenna and GPS hardware were also covered. In the next chapter, you'll learn about the software that can be used to scan for 802.11 networks in detail.
