The History of Scott Summers

Scott Summers was born the elder son of US Air Force test pilot, Major Christopher Summers. During a flight with his wife, Katherine Ann and his sons nearby Cape Takataga, Alaska, the plane was suddenly attacked by a Shi'ar Empire scout ship. Emperor D'Ken Neramni kidnaps Scott's mother and imprisons his father. Scott and his younger brother Alex are tied to a parachute and manage to escape. The danger of the fall triggered Scott's latent mutant ability which he uses to soften their descent. Unfortunately, he suffered a concussion resulting in the loss of the ability to control his optic beams.

Scott remained comatose for the better part of a year while Alex is adopted by a family. Later Scott is placed in an orphanage located in Omaha, Nebraska where he befriends a boy named Nathan. Unbeknownst to Scott, the orphanage is operated by Mr. Sinister in the guise of little Nathan. As a teenager, Scott suffered from severe eyestrain and headaches. In Washington, D.C. an optician discovered the solution, lenses constructed from ruby quartz.

While visiting the city, Scott unwillingly demolished a crane, causing steel girders to fall towards the unexpecting crowd. Scott quickly zappedd the steel, and the mob chased him thinking that he had intended to kill them. Scott fled onto a freight train leaving town. Professor Charles Xavier working with F.B.I. Agent Fred Duncan attempt to find Scott. In the meantime, Jack O'Diamonds, the Living Diamond, made Scott his unwilling accomplice in crime. Scott is soon rescued by Xavier and is enrolled at Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters.

Scott soon fell in love with his teammate Jean Grey (Marvel Girl). Scott became the leader of the X-Men. Shortly after, the Phoenix Force impersonated Jean, while the real Jean remained in suspended animation. When Phoenix sacrificed her life to save the universe, Scott mourned her death and left the X-Men. He later returned and met Madelyne Pryor, a woman who held an uncanny resemblance to Jean. They married and had a son, Nathaniel Christopher Summers. Scott once again left the X-Men. When the real Jean Grey finally emerged, Scott left Madelyne and along with Jean founded a new team, X-Factor. Madelyne was revealed to be a clone sent by Mr. Sinister. She became the Goblin Queen and almost succeeds in killing Jean before being defeated with the help of Phoenix.

Soon Nathan is infected by a techno organic virus by Apocalyse which will kill him unless he is taken into the future for treatment by Mother Askani (Rachel Summers, Scott and Jean's daughter in an alternate timeline). Cyclops and the members of X-Factor return to the X-Men .

Eventually, Scott and Jean are married. For their honeymoon, Mother Askani, transported their spirits into the bodies of a couple named Slym and Redd, where they raised Nathan for several years. A few year later, the powerful Onslaught wrecked havok in New York and Xavier turned himself over to the government and Scott assumed leadership of the school. During Operation: Zero Tolerance, a time-bomb is implanted into Scott's chest, but is successfully removed.

To aid in his recovery, Scott and Jean retired to Ptarmigan Creek, Alaska. Upon their return to the mansion, they discovered that the team had disbanded. Suddenly, the Mannites are threatened by a new threat that forced Scott to found a new team, the Astonishing X-Men. Soon after there was the calling of the twelve, powerful mutants who would be mutantkind's only hope. Apocalypse captured the twelve in Egypt. In an effort to save the life of X-Man (Nathan in an alternate timeline) Scott sacrificed his own life and fused with Apocalypse to become one.
