The Official Aldershot Grange F.A.Q.

What topic would you like information on?

What is Aldershot Grange?
Where is Aldershot Grange?
Ok I'm ready to try it! What do I need to know
Who do I contact to participate?!

So what is this "Aldershot Grange?"

Aldershot Grange uses a "paper-and-pencil" style of gaming, where you keep track of your character on paper and use your imagination to create the rest. In short, if you think that a computer game is not a game unless it has graphics, you may not enjoy the style of playing at the Grange. There are no graphics, and to participate, you will have to interact with real people (or be very bored).

However, if you are willing to give it a try, you may find it to be far more challenging, exciting, and fun than any graphics dependant game you've ever played.

So where is this "Aldershot Grange?"

Aldershot Grange proper does not exist of course, but its setting would be a port town in a distant land. Any race is permissable (this is free-forum after all). Any sex is permitted. Any storyline cooperating with the rules and terms is permitted. Do you see a pattern yet? Like I said, this is free forum. The limit is only your imagination.

Ok, I'm ready to try. How does it work?

The most important thing to remember about roleplay is courtesy. These are some basic courtesies of online RP. Our rooms are a community where any creative individual is free to spend time. Because of this we ask:

1. Don't use references to something OOC in the FFRP room such as mentioning a player's name or holding an OOC conversation within the room. When OOC things are mentioned repeatedly in a room, they tend to shatter the illusion that so many work dilligently to create.

2. Respond to the world around you. If someone throws a glass against the hearth, respond. Be startled. Give them a nasty look if they are roleplaying a drunk drooling all over themselves. In the case of a crowded room, use the chaos as an excuse as to why you didn't hear or see the act.

3. Acknowledge other players. By doing this, we create a more realistic environment. Additionally, these acknowledgements are how our characters make friends or enemies.

4. Ask questions of experienced players. You will get more and better results from other players if you ask them to play with you.

5. Remember that the more courtesy you extend to others, the more they are going to want to play with you. No one has fun when one character ignores another or is wantonly attacked in the middle of a hot bowl of soup.

6. Dice rolling is permissable, however if this is abused, PAX INC reserves the right to elliminate the offender (see the rules and regulations page.)

7. a)Dialogue – Speech is simply typed onto the screen. It is assumed that any words typed are spoken by your character. Quotes are not necessary. Out of character (OOC) comments should appear in double parenthesis:

Example: ((Sorry. I'll send you an E-mail with that as soon as possible.))

b) Additionally, mental thoughts and telepathic communication should be noted as follows.

~ Sorry I'm late. I ran into a beggar on the road and had to put it out of its misery. ~.

By following this format, you let the rest of the room know that the words were not spoken aloud, and therefore, can not be commented on unless their character has some special ability like ESP.

**** IMPORTANT! ****

About ESP- Generally things in profiles or background files are not accessable through ESP. If character X is not wearing a wedding ring, yet you read in his profile that he abhors the idea of another relationsip because his first wife died, and he is still in pain from her passing, your character will not know what you know. ESP as an excuse for OOC knowlege is not generally well recieved.

c) Actions - Actions are an important part of the free forum Role play. They help us to visualize the character's movements. At the grange we utilize the "double colon" style of action:

Example: ::closes his eyes softly and mumbles something in her ear before glaring at the man behind them:: You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, but I need to cut this fine gentleman's throat out. Excuse me a moment.

Above all, have fun! I know I have said this before, but free form gaming rooms exist with this sole purpose in mind.

Ok, Now- Who do I contact?
