Sepdet's Labors

This webpage, obviously, is for my friends rather than my colleagues, but for what it's worth, I am a classics student. That is, I study ancient Greek and Roman language and culture, doing the sort of research that makes the sets of Gladiator possible. Ideally I'll find some way to combine my computer skills with my scholarly bent, but first I need to pass my PhD exams and write a dissertation.

So far I've worked for the Perseus Project, where I was lucky enough to be posted when the beta versions of Mosaic first hit the nets. I helped design their original web site starting in 1993. Greece & Rome online: the first humanities web site on the net! More recently, I've worked at the University of CA at Irvine. I've edited Greek e-texts for the TLG, and taught several classes: Latin & Greek Roots of English, Latin, and TA'd for Art History. For a sample of what I do, here's my complete translations of Sappho, at least as much of her poetry as has survived, and an ongoing translation of Tacitus' Germania.
