Summon the Keeper
Summon the Keeper
By Tanya Huff

Austin and Claire must save the world from the powers of Darkness. Claire is a Keeper, the eldest daughter of a family of supernatural trouble-shooters. Claire is accustomed to quick fixes, and quicker escapes. And Austin...he's her cat.

When the sneaky 'Cousin' up and left Claire propritess of the Elysian Fields B&B she discovers a portal to Hell in the basement. Claire envisions a life of unaccountable drudgery...running a shabby hotel and keeping the Hellhole stable. But with a little help from a handsome 18th century French ghost, a hunky Newfundlander Handyman, a bratty little sister, and of course...her cat, Claire surpises everyone. Most especially herslef.

This novel by Tanya Huff is a triumph of wit and imagination. Claire is an unwilling hero with just a 'little' trouble with commitment. And with two exquisit men vying for her attention this problem is almost more troublesome than the sarcastic evil in the cellar. Huff combines humor, horror, and romance that any fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will recognize, and love.

List in Translation
Lost in Translation
By Margaret Ball

Margaret Ball brings readers of Science Fiction and Fantasy just what they aren't expecting. Her novels combine the gleaming modern world of blue-jeans, CD players, and dysfunctional families with a medieval glory of Wizardry and Scholasticism.

Allie, a spoiled, neglected rich girl finally pushes her father too far, and he pulls her out of college, and sends her to a finishing school in France. On the way, Allie gets very lost, and ends up...Somewhere Else. But Allie has abilities her father never dreamed of, and she thrives in her new environment...much to the chagrin of those out to kill her.

Margaret Ball's heroine is independant, smart, stubborn, and unflappable. All characteristics that give Allie the chance she needs to both survive in her new world, and bring down the unseen foes that are set on her failure. That is, if her father doesn't interfere....

Pegasus in Space
Pegasus in Space
By Anne McCaffrey

McCaffrey takes readers on a long-awaited return visit to her world of Talents. Pegasus in Space takes place within a year of the conclusion of Pegasus in Flight, and follows the Talented Peter Reidinger, Rhyssa Owen-Lehardt, and Johnny Green from Earth to the Stars.

Though observant readers might notice some continuity problems between the two novels, Pegasus in Space is an emminently satisfying conclusion to the events first described in 'In Flight'. Multidimensional, believable characters, Peter, Rhyssa, Johhny and the other psychically gifted Talents provide realistic heros in a not-so-far-fetched near future.

Pegasus in Space chronicals the begining of the FT$T and is a better bridge to "The Rowen" series, taking place some 100 years in the future. McCaffrey blends Science Fiction with Fantasy almost seamlessly. Her science is believable, and her view of the future, given the problems in today's world, quite likely.

Like much of her work, Anne McAffrey's Talent novel is quite enjoyable, and leaves readers smiling.

Of swords and Spells
Of Swords and Spells
By Delia Marshall Turner

A follow-up, and companion to her first Novel, Nameless Magery, Turner returns to the Universe of Enforcers and endangerd magic. Her new Heroine, Makla, is as fierce, strong, and capable as Lissane in Magery.

Malka carries an astonishing, and very dangerous secret. Running from her cruel Master, and the Enforcement minions bent on possessing her power, Malka falls in with a ship of Mages and it's unusual captain. Her secret threatens them all, but it's the one thing that could save the universe.

Though Malka is every bit as enthralling a heroine as Lissane, Of Swords and Spells hasn't quite captured the excitment and enchanting fantasy of Nameless Magery. The plot wanders from time to time, and the relationships between Malka, Lissane's people, and the Mage ship are often convoluted and confusing. Those wanting to understand more about Lissane and her past are the likelest readers of this second novel.
