BRADFORD COUNTY

Bradford County is located in North Central Florida. The major city is Starke, where the Bradford County Health Department is found. The population is 25,355. According to the Office of the Governor, the 1997 median household income was $30,387. Government employment is one of the major sources of income along with services and retail trade.

The Bradford County Health Department (BCHD) offers medical care to individuals who are not indigent, as well as those who are. Some have other third party sponsorship, and others do not. For those patients above 100% of the Federal Poverty Guideline, services are offered on a sliding fee schedule according to income. The BCHD provides the following services:

  • Communicable diseases
  • Tuberculosis
  • Prenatal clinic (Thursday)
  • Family planning
  • Post-menopause treatment
  • Female STDs
  • Male STDs (Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday and Friday all day
  • Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
  • Child health (up to 18 years) well or sick care
  • School health
  • Immunizations
  • Adult primary care
  • In addition, the BCHD provides anonymous or confidential Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) testing and counseling.

The BCHD has a special interest in providing all children with school required immunization for Tuberculosis, DPT, Polio, Hepatitis B, and Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. Health Department staff will be at the schools to immunize the children going into 7th grade and all others can receive their immunizations at the Health Department.

The Alachua County Medical Society Inc.’s We Care Physician Referral Network accepts specialty referrals from Bradford County on a case-by-case basis. A participating physician can only generate referrals. Eligible patients are able to receive free specialty medical care and any necessary hospitalization services.

The American Cancer Society, in partnership with the Volunteer Health Care Provider Program serves Bradford County with the "Early Diagnostic Initiative". This initiative provides free mammograms and/or sonograms, as well as follow-up medical treatment to indigent, uninsured women identifying a breast abnormality.
