MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

Miami-Dade County encompasses more than 2,000 square miles (larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware). The county’s population in 1999 is estimated to be 2,118,696. Twenty-nine percent of the population is below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. The community is located along the southeast tip of the Florida peninsula. Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean bound it to the east, Everglades National Park to the West, the Florida Keys to the south, and Broward County to the north.

According to the Florida Department of Health in 1999, Miami-Dade County had 6,294 medical doctors, 240 osteopathic physicians, 1,420 dentists, and 17,296 nurses actively licensed. Miami-Dade County provides comprehensive and sophisticated health and human services through an array of programs.

The Volunteer Services Program in Miami-Dade County is a cooperative effort initiated by the Miami-Dade County Health Department; the Dade County Medical Association, community programs; private organizations and a diverse group of individual healthcare professionals. We are very proud of our community that contributes their time and talents, in helping achieve the goals of the Department of Health.

The volunteer program is an extremely cost effective approach to addressing healthcare access. It extends state sovereign immunity protection to healthcare professionals and others who provide free healthcare services to the poor through contractual agreements with the state through Chapter 110 and 766.115 Florida Statutes.

Corporate contracted providers and partners join forces with the Florida Department of Health to provide vital professional health care services that benefit children and families who would otherwise not receive the needed treatment and care. Additionally student interns and residents play a vital role in the provision of health services in public health.
