HAMILTON
COUNTY
Hamilton County is located in
North Central Florida. The largest city is Jasper. The
population is 14,120. According to the Office of the
Governor, the 1997 median household income is $23,070.
The majority of employment comes from government
services, transportation, communications, and utilities.
The major employers are PCS Phosphate, Hamilton
Correctional Institute, and the County School Board.
The Hamilton County Health
Department (HCHD) has one main location in
Jasper. There are two outlying clinics, in Jennings and
White Springs. A registered nurse and a office clerk
staff these clinics one morning a week. The HCHD offers
care to all residents of Hamilton County, and offers
primary care to adults. They have a school health
program, with a LPN full-time in each of the six schools
in the county, and two supervisory nurses. Day care is
offered for children of teens who attend school. Because
of the small size of the community, the practitioners are
well known and have quite a bit of community involvement.
Services provided by the Health Department are:
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases
- Women, Infants, and Children
(WIC)
- In addition, the HCHD
provides anonymous or confidential Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/ Acquired Immune
Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) testing and
counseling.

Members of the Kiwanis
regularly assist the Hamilton County Health Department
with providing immunizations to low income citizens of
the county.
The American Cancer
Society, in partnership with the Volunteer
Services Program serves Hamilton County with the
"Early Diagnostic Initiative". This initiative
provides free mammograms and/or sonograms, as well as
follow-up medical treatment to indigent, uninsured women
identifying a breast abnormality.
