County Profile:

1998 population 22,654. Thirty-seven percent of the population is below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. The major city is Wauchula.

Health Care Access:

According to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, in 1988, Hardy County had 10 medical doctors, 1 osteopathic physician, 2 dentists, and 84 registered nurses actively licensed.

Status of Volunteer Efforts:

The Hardee County Health Department staff has participated in prevention activities throughout the community that included giving flu-shot vaccinations and providing free blood pressure checks. Care A Van travels to Hardee County and provides free or affordable primary health care services to low income, migrant families.
