Hendry County Health Department
Most of the volunteer efforts at
the Hendry County Health Department are focused on
helping teenagers become healthier. The health department
holds sessions in its Teen Center twice a week, once in
LaBelle and once in Clewiston. During these sessions,
adults help the teens with their homework during the
school year, make presentations to them about health
issues such as safety and date rape, and teach classes. A
local dance instructor volunteers her time to give
students lessons.
The teenagers themselves also
volunteer at the health department. Sometimes their
efforts are focused on assisting during the Teen Center
sessions, other times they visit nursing homes, teach
children in day care about the importance and method of
washing their hands, and encourage their peers to delay
pregnancy. They participated in the local Swamp Cabbage
parade, where they had a float with a positive message
and passed out flyers with health information to
onlookers. The teens, who are called Healthkateens, are
currently planning an event at the local library where
they will teach youngsters between the ages of 2 and 8
how and why to brush their teeth.
Volunteers of all kinds (adults,
teenagers, professional, lay persons) are needed and
appreciated at the health department. If you are
