HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY

County Profile:

1998 population 946,328. Twenty-two percent of the population is below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. The major city is Tampa.

Health Care Access:

According to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, in 1988, Hillsborough County had 2,372 medical doctors, 147 osteopathic physicians, 467 dentists, and 8,924 registered nurses actively licensed.


Chapter 110 Volunteer Program:

Hillsborough County Health Department in partnership with St. Joseph’s Hospital Wellness Outreach Program, the Kiwanis, and the Tampa Housing Authority, continues to provide immunizations to children of low-income families in Hillsborough County. The Be–Wise Immunization Program utilizes a mobile van to deliver immunizations at Health Fairs and other scheduled sites throughout the County. The Hillsborough County Health Department continues to provide vaccines, needles, and immunization history and records for all children needing immunizations. Status of Volunteer Efforts:

Center for Family Health Eldermed, Inc. is a non–profit organization dedicated to provide free primary health services, promotion, and education for the working poor of the Tampa Bay area. The clinic provides primary care, gynecology, podiatry, mental health, pediatrics, and dentistry services. For additional information contact: Center for Family Health, 912 E. The Redlands Christian Migrant Association Health Outreach Project is a community-based organization that identifies migrant farm workers who do not have access to health care, social and educational services.
