County Profile:

1999 population 18,320. Forty percent of the population is below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. The major city is Bonifay.

Health Care Access:

According to Medical Quality Assurance, in 1999, Holmes County had nine medical doctors, one osteopathic physician, two dentists, and 185 nurses actively licensed.

This county has a very rural population with very few medical specialists in the area.

Status of Volunteer Efforts:

The extent of volunteer health care continues to be limited to occasional free care by a private physician.

A few Holmes County residents received donated medical care through the Bay County BayCares Program.
