JACKSON COUNTY


County Profile:

1999 population 50,352. Thirty-five percent of the population is below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. The major city is Marianna.

Health Care Access:

According to Medical Quality Assurance, in 1999, Jackson County had 48 medical doctors, three osteopathic physicians, 15 dentists, and 804 nurses actively licensed.


Status of Volunteer Efforts:

Jackson Hospital provides free care for indigent patients on an as needed basis. BASIC (Bay Aids Services and Information Coalition) will enroll and underwrite medical care for HIV infected patients.

WAGES clients provide volunteer clerical services while receiving on-the-job training at the county health department.

Non-medical personnel – community volunteers provide clerical assist at the Health Department. Contact: Syble Thompson (850) 482-9191 or Suncom 789-9191.

A few Jackson County residents received donated medical speciality care through the Bay County BayCares Program.
