JEFFERSON COUNTY

Jefferson County is located in Northwest Florida, just east of Tallahassee and bordered on the north by Georgia. Jefferson County’s population is just over 14,000. The county is rural and its economy relies primarily on agriculture. There are a number of stately homes in Monticello, the county seat, that pre-date the Civil War. Many of these homes reflect the wealth of the cotton and tobacco plantations that once dominated the county economy.

The Jefferson County Health Department has joined with the Capital Medical Society’s We Care Network to provide free specialty medical care and hospitalization to income-eligible persons. The Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club have been regular partners on several volunteer projects with the county health department. These projects obtained eyeglasses, provided sports physical exams, and supported child immunizations and teen pregnancy prevention.

Persons interested in volunteering should contact Rebecca Baker, RN at 1255 W. Washington St., Monticello, FL 32344. She may also be reached by telephone at (850) 342-0170.
