LAFAYETTE COUNTY

The Lafayette County Health Department (LCHD) is located in North Central Florida. The largest city is Mayo. The population of Lafayette is 6,998 people. According to the Office of the Governor, the 1997 median household income was $24,892. The majority of income is found in government, and finance, insurance, and real estate jobs. Some of the major employers are the Correctional Institutions and Baha Cruisers.

The Lafayette County Health Department is in Mayo. The Health Department runs the school health program. There is a nurse and a nurse's aide present full-time to provide care in each of the schools. The services provided are:

  • Obstetrics,
  • Family planning
  • General nursing
  • Pediatrics
  • Primary care
  • Healthy Start
  • Tuberculosis
  • Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) (twice a month)
  • Immunizations
  • In addition, the LCHD provides anonymous or confidential Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) testing and counseling.

The American Cancer Society, in partnership with the Volunteer Services Program serves Lafayette County with the "Early Diagnostic Initiative". This initiative provides free mammograms and/or sonograms, as well as follow-up medical treatment to indigent, uninsured women identifying a breast abnormality.
