ST. JOHNS COUNTY
There is opportunity for licensed
health care professionals as well as non-licensed
personnel in St. Johns County to volunteer their time and
expertise in the health care field. In St. Johns County,
there are three health care programs that need
volunteers. The first volunteer program is located at the
St. Johns County Health Department with
their various clinics and programs. The second program
provides free medical services to eligible individuals
and is sponsored by community churches. The third program
is a free dental clinic for patients referred from the
primary care clinics and is sponsored by the dental
community.
St. Johns County Health Department
utilizes volunteers in clinics and programs. Some of the
ways volunteers can help:
- WIC (Women, Infant, and
Children) Breastfeeding Peer Counselors
- Reading to Children While
Waiting for Their Appointment
- Licensed Health Care
Professionals, i.e., Physicians, Registered
Nurses
- Special Events, i.e.,
Immunizations Outreach
- Clerical Assistants in
all Clinics and Programs
- Outreach Programs such as
Prevention of Tobacco Use by Youth
- HIV Pre and Post Test
Counseling
The Good Samaritan Clinics are
volunteer primary care clinics staffed entirely with
volunteers and sponsored by two local churches as well as
the community. The clinics provide free medical treatment
(and when necessary, hospitalization), to St. Johns
County persons in need of these services. If a patient
requires medical evaluation/treatment beyond the scope of
what the clinic can provide, a referral is made to an
appropriate specialist. The guidelines for acceptance
into the clinics are: the patients income is at or
below 150 percent of poverty level as defined by the
Federal Government and he/she carries no applicable
insurance. Presently, there are two primary care clinics.
They are as follows:
St.
Cyprian Episcopal Clinic: 39 Lovett,
St. Augustine, Open every Saturday, from 9:00
a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
St.
Augustine Technical Center Clinic:
2980 Collins Avenue, St. Augustine, Open
every Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Dental services are provided to
those individuals referred from the primary care clinics.
The qualifications are 100 percent of the federal poverty
guidelines and no applicable insurance.
St. Johns County
Health Department, Dental Office, 180 Marine
Street, St. Augustine. Open the last Friday of the
month from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the exception
of May, November, and December which will be the
third Friday.
