SUWANNEE COUNTY

Suwannee County is located in North Central Florida. It is rich in forests, rivers, and lakes. The largest city is Live Oak. The population of Suwannee County is 33,746. According to the Office of the Governor, the 1997 median household income was $24,503. The majority of employment comes form government, services, and retail trade.

The Suwannee County Health Department (SCHD) has two sites. The main clinic is in Live Oak, and the other is in Branford. The clinic in Branford does not offer as many services as the main clinic. Both clinics use a sliding fee scale for patients who do not have Medicaid. They do not see patients with private insurance. The county has a school health program, with minimal involvement through the Health Department. The following services are provided:

  • Primary care
  • Family planning
  • Pediatrics
  • Immunizations
  • Tuberculosis
  • Healthy Start
  • Women, Infants, and Children (twice a month)
  • In addition, the BCHD provides anonymous or confidential Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) testing and counseling.

Branford

  • Primary care
  • General nursing
  • Pediatrics (Tuesday afternoons)
  • Family planning
  • Women, Infants, and Children
  • (twice a month)

    The Alachua County Medical Society Inc.’s We Care Physician Referral Network accepts specialty referrals from Suwannee County on a case-by-case basis. A participating physician can only generate referrals. Eligible patients are able to receive free specialty medical care and any necessary hospitalization services.

    The American Cancer Society, in partnership with the Volunteer Health Care Provider Program serves Suwannee County with the "Early Diagnostic Initiative". This initiative provides free mammograms and/or sonograms, as well as follow-up medical treatment to indigent, uninsured women identifying a breast abnormality.
