TAYLOR COUNTY Taylor County is in Northwest Florida on the Gulf of Mexico, in a region of the state called the "Big Bend’ of the coastal shoreline. The county population is nearly 20,000 and the major city and county seat is the city of Perry. The economy is based on timber products, light manufacturing and seafood. Taylor County and its four adjacent counties are designated to be rural, with each having a population density of less than 100 persons per square mile. There is a local hospital and 16 physicians reside in the county. The director of the Taylor County Health Department, Dr. Jerry Boland, is the past president of the Florida Association of Family Practice Physicians. The Taylor County Health Department has an active volunteer program involving persons, organizations and business contributing to the health of the community. Doctors Memorial Hospital provides a part-time family practice physician at the health department clinic in Steinhatchee at no charge. The Florida Baptist Convention mobile dental van regularly visits the county and uses local volunteer dentists and support personnel. Each year the county health department recognizes volunteers by awarding plaques, certificates and other means of appreciation. Persons interested in
