WAKULLA COUNTY Wakulla County is in Northwest Florida, just south of Tallahassee on the Gulf of Mexico. The county is rural and much of the area is within the boundaries of the federal St. Marks Wildlife Refuge or the Apalachicola National Forest. The current population is nearly 20,000. The county seat of Crawfordville houses the Wakulla County Health Department clinic. There is no hospital in the county and five physicians and one dentist reside in the county. Within the county is Wakulla Springs, the largest fresh water spring in the world. Most of the county economy is based on seafood and timber, with many residents commuting to Tallahassee for employment. The Wakulla County Health Department has a clinic in Crawfordville, and there is a federally funded community health center satellite clinic in the community of Panacea. The county health department is a participant in the Capital Medical Society We Care network so that income eligible patients may be referred for specialty care and hospital treatment. Volunteer activities at the county health department have focused on child immunizations and school health fairs. The county health department also serves as a training site for nursing and medical students. Of particular interest is the development of volunteer dental services within the county.
