A word before beginning...

Here's a list of some of my favorite books. These are the ones I read and reread and wear to pieces. These are the stories that I think have real power: the power to move and touch people. They are all highly recommended. Run out to your local library or bookstore, and snag any of them. They're mostly SF (speculative fiction, an mostly redundant yet inclusive term for science fiction, fantasy, space opera, sword and sorcery, etc.), but there may be a few surprises in there for those who never look outside the Science Fiction and Fantasy aisle(s) of their local bookstore. It took me quite a long time to realize in my blinkered pig-ignorance that not all "classics" or "literature" was high-brow crap that everybody merely pretended to like. That was so silly-- no, say annoying, stupid, foolish, just plain ignorant!-- of me. Mea culpa. I'm much better now. Really.
