What is Pencak Silat

 

Pencak Silat is the generic term for the indigenous arts of the Malay-Indonesian archipelago, that is Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei and has played an important part in the history of the region. It is closely intertwined with the culture of the Malay-Indonesian peoples and has influenced their ritual ceremonies, their warrior traditions and, in the old days, their commercial activities, when powerful warrior states had a great influence on maritime trade in the region.

 

Traditionally was part of a wider education and was aimed at enhancing and strengthening self-awareness, self-discipline, integrity, discipline, responsibility, loyalty and cooperation amongst the practitioners.

 

Pencak Silat training incorporate the artistic, the self-defence and the sport aspects, the latter two having gained the most popularity in modern times. By learning Pencak Silat people have found that they become more aware of their sense, that they can increase their physical stamina, their body awareness, flexibility and grace. Unlike other martial arts, there are no grades to achieve in most silat style and each individual progresses at his or her own pace. This makes this form of self-defence attractive to people of all ages.
