Jennifer Lien is departing Star Trek: Voyager. A longrumored and just-as-often-denied move, it is official. Insiders suggest thst despite such well-received episodes as "Warlord" and "Before & After," the writters were uncertain what to do with her character. It is unclear how Kes would be written out of the show or whether Lien would return to film a few episodes resolving the character's fate.

Say farewell to Kes.

Antonio Banderas, currently heroic under The Mask of Zorro, will next star in the film version of Crichton's fantasy odyssey Eaters of the Dead. John (Predator) McTiernan directs. William (T2) Wisher scripts.

Crichton's new novel Airframe is also readying for a movie launch. Crichton produces, McTiernan directs and Wisher scripts. Déja vu!

Meanwhile, Crichton's old novel Sphere is before the cameras after a delay. Barry Levinson is directing a cast led by Dustin Hoffman and Sharon Stone.

UPDATES

Development of the Peter Jackson/Universal Pictures version of King Kong has slowed. And sadly, its no longer targeted for summer 1998 bow. However Jackson may do a liveaction film version of J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings before Kong.

The sucess of the Star Wars: Special Edition releases has solified plans for the theatrical bow this fall of Close Encounters of the Third Kind: The Ultimate Edition. This version of the film would include material from the old film, 1980's CE3K: Special Edition (which featured new footage and FX) and the TV version (which differs from both). Also being mulled by the studios for future anniversary theatrical re-releases: ALIEN, E.T. and 2001: A Space Odyssey. No Indiana Jones films, guys?

Actually, it will be Casper Von Dien --- soon to be seen in Starship Troopers --- who plays the Jungle Lord in Tarzan and Jane, not Sean Bean.
The new James Bond movie now has a title. After flirting with numerous possibilites (including the bizzare Avatar), Bond 18 is now officially Tomorrow Never Dies. And yes, Desmond Llewelyn will return once again to play Q.
