The Making of a Soldier

(I would hope that it would be obvious to all that this information would not be commonly known to the players in the game. It is purely put up as an interesting side note to my character. As well, please keep in mind that these logs are nearly two years out of date. Sadly, I don't keep up with editing and posting them quite like I should.)

Daris was born on the ocean world of Calithdor in the Colony Rim of space, his mothers homeplanet. His father came from a very wealthy and poweful family, holding a controlling interest in one of the larger shipping interests in the Republic. The business was centered on Coruscant but his father agreed to reside on Calithdor for his mothers sake. Daris grew up on the oceans of this beautiful planet and came to love the untamed water of his homeworld, something that would stay with him forever. Daris was the eldest child, though his sister Syra and brothers Tarrel and Larram would follow afterwards. The Kyrn family continued to live happily on Calithdor until Daris' 12th year when his mother was tragically stricken with a rare and incurable disease, finally succumbing to it.

Daris' father changed at this point, throwing himself into his work to bury away his pain. The Kyrn family suddenly found itself uprooted and moved back to Coruscant where Arrol Kyrn took over the reins of the family business. Daris' grief of losing his mother was great but to make matters worse his father decided he must be groomed to be the eventual successor to the family business and to carry on the proud tradition of the Kyrn name. Shipped off and seperated from his siblings, Daris was sent to the very finest schools in the galaxy.

After the sudden lose of his mother and being uprooted from the only home he had ever known, being seperated from the rest of his family proved to be too much. Daris rebelled, doing very poorly at school. In his 14th year Daris began having strange dreams that grew progressively worse. It eventually reached the point where he was terrified to go to sleep. Specialists were called in but no problems could be found. He was returned home to another surprise, his father had remarried, this time for the connections and new business opportunities it provided his company. He had married the daughters of one of the larger old noble houses in the Helathir sector of space.

His father, conviced that their was nothing actually wrong with Daris, was prepared to send him back to the schools. For the first time in his young life Daris refused, defying his father. Against his wishes he was packed off to be sent back to school. This time Daris did not go quietly and instead took the first chance he could to slip away from his guardian. At the age of 15, Daris was on his own. Having been prepared to take advantage of such an opportunity, Daris was not without resources. For a time he simply travelled, fleeing his past. However his dreams would not leave him and he grew increasingly desperate, searching for anything to end them.

Then, back in the Colony Rim of space on the colony moon of Alcor III, Daris met a kindly old man, someone who he felt understood him, Garet Janaral. He explained to Daris that he had an incredibly unique ability, the ability to sense and touch the Force. His dreams were but one aspect of this ability and that his unrest was causing his abilities to manifest themselves, sometimes in frightening and uncontrolled ways. At first Daris gladly accepted the old man's words, feeling pride in his ability. The dreams slowly disappeared and as they did some of his old resentment returned. Most especially, since this seemed but one more aspect of his 'proud tradition' that he should uphold. Feeling that he was being forced into something he wanted no part of he conviced himself that the old man was simply mistaken and that even if he wasn't he could simply give up his ability. Late one night, Daris gathered his things and simply left.

More troubled then ever, Daris vowed to renounce all that he was supposed to be. Seeking to be the exact opposite than he was supposed to be, for a time Daris lived amonst the streets, seeking other desperate people like himself. His sheltered upbringing ill prepared him for what life could be for those not so fortunate. Then one night Daris tried to interfere when he witnessed a man being savagely beaten by three older teens. Needless to say his attempt was a huge failure and he was left with two small scars, one on each cheek under his eyes as a reminder.

Having no resources remaining and desperate Daris turned to his last hope, an old family friend 'Uncle Nabin'. Nabin Reese was an old friend of his fathers as well as an extremely decorated officer in the Republic military, a Colonel. Nabin took the 17 year old Daris in, promising not to tell his family his whereabouts. Nabin provided Daris what he most needed, discipline, understanding and a role model. Having seen the despair of the streets and feeling his helplessness at being unable to prevent any of it, Daris was an avid student of Nabin, seeking to learn all he could about combat and self defence. Never wanting to feel helpless again, Daris thrived in this new disciplined environment.

When he turned 19 he was contacted by his father. Despite their differences, Daris had changed a great deal, becoming a quiet, serious young man. At first he was glad to hear from his father, though that happiness disappeared when he discovered that his father intended for him to return and join the family business. Daris had no intention of doing that, having his sights set on a military career. His father was horrified that he would chose such a career and once again Daris found himself set adrift, enrolling the Republic Military Academy hoping that one man could indeed make a difference in the galaxy.

Daris thrived in the academy, eagerly pursuing his studies as he saught his military commision. Having already received a great deal of training from Nabin Reese, Daris stood out from the rest of the cadets, quickly making it to the top of his class. Though Carida was quite different from his home, he found himself fitting in with relative ease. Seeking rigid discipline, Daris seemed to have found his place, both in the academy and on the well ordered planet of Carida, the center of military activities for the Republic.

Quickly placed on the fast track to become an officer, Daris spent the last 6 months of his academy life onboard the Victory Class Star Destroyer Triumph, an unusual opportunity for a cadet. Having thrived on the lessons and working extremely hard, he managed to graduate from the academy after only three instead of the customary four. Admiral Ashkevron himself presided over his graduation from cadet status to his officially becoming a member of the Republic military. Offered the chance to stay aboard the Triumph, Daris politely refused to transfer his commision to the Navy, knowing that it was in GroundOps that he truly belonged.

He returned to Carida, content to be back after his tour in space. Having graduated at the top of his class with an unblemished record, Daris was offered the opportunity to become an instructor at the Republic Military Academy, an opportunity that he eagerly seized upon. Seeking to serve the Republic and pay back some tiny portion of his debt that he felt he owed, Daris could think of no better way than training and aiding the next generation of cadets. While at the academy, he had received a great deal of his training from Corporal Repwin Arbayne, someone that he would continue to admire and look up to throughout the rest of his career, so he well understood the importance of not only training the cadets in combat, but in making sure that they fully understood what the military truly stood for... Honor, Duty, Dedication, and Obligation.

For the next several years Daris served with distiction as both an instructor at the RMA and as a member of the Carida Garrison, with numerous commendations on his record for meritous service. The military had grown much more tense in recent years, especially after the loss of the Dreadnaught Marius in a remote region of the Outer Rim. Things grew even more tense after a series of arrests were made on Carida... arrests of aliens matching the general description of the enemies the Republic had faced when they had lost the Marius. Finding these infiltraitors on Carida, at the very heart of the Republic. Things grew even more tense after these prisoners were spirited out of the RMA by unknown means.

A small matter came up when a local resident of Carida tries to sneak his way on board the VSD Triumph using a fake uniform. Though he succeeds, he turns himself over, surrendering to authorities and is promptly arrested and jailed. Discover this, Daris goes to speak with the prisoner, a Mr. Sammy Singer, owner of the local ship repair shop. He is introduced to the world of the Fate Criminal Cartel for the first time, acquiring a great amount of knowledge from this man who seems to know so much about this organizations inner workings and leaders. Daris comes to place a great deal of trust in Sammy, despite his strange knowledge, and could not help but like the man. Unfortunately Admiral Ashkevron does not feel the same and was determined to break Sammy, keeping him confined until he could insure that he could be completely trusted. Finally giving up on this task Sammy is released on the condition that he continues to report to Daris, furthering the militaries knowledge of Fate.

Despite these larger concerns, for the most part Daris' attention was fixed on life at the academy. By and large, things ran smoothly, Daris slowly beginning to feel at ease teaching cadets not that much younger than himself. Having befriended many of them, that made upcoming events even more difficult to deal with. Outside of the academy, his principle concern had becoming the investigation of the criminal organization known as 'Fate', based on Corellia. Surprisingly, his duties at the RMA and his investigations as part of the Carida garrison would cross paths. After a seemingly innocent brawl between two cadets, Daris talked with the participants and found that things were not as umcomplicated as he might have hoped. As his investigation continued and the evidence mounted it finally came to the conclusion that as disturbing as it may have been, cadets had actually been involved in an attempt to spy on top secret activites.

The disturbing matter of the cadets handled, Daris turned his attention towards keeping the pressure up on the Fate organization. An opportunity soon appeared and Daris fully believed that he had to seize it. An informant game forward telling of a arms deal that was to occur on Corellia at the Fate Casino later that week. Though he distrusted the source, Daris felt the matter had to be looked into. The local garrison stretched to the limit, and no one interested in the problems on Corellia, Daris, along with two other officers recruited a handful of bright cadets to help them with the raid. Particularly notable were Talon Felth and Lonestar, two promising cadets that Daris had befriended.

The raid went off as planned but the information turned out to be false. Having nothing to show for their effort, Daris and the team beat a hasty retreat, only to run into a pair of Bounty Hunters... in particular Shikh Cthonian. Angered by his lack of success, Daris did not deal well with the jibes by these Bounty Hunters. Things were on the verge of getting unpleasant, only the fact that they were outnumbered 10-2 likely prevented the two hired Hunters from becoming openly hostile. Frustrated, Daris and the team returned to Carida, putting the matter out of their minds. That is until two cadets... two members of that team turned up dead... Talon and Lonestar. Furious with himself for having failed his two friends, Daris attended to examining the bodies, determined to find out who the guilty parties were.

Daris had strong suspicions on who was responsible. In his mind the fact that it was Talon Felth and Lonestar who were ambushed connected it to the aborted raid on the Fate Casino. Fate was responsible... Fate and Shikh Cthonian. Dealing with a lack of information and Lonestar's striken fiancee Callista, Daris began combing his standard source for enough evidence to arrest Shikh. Both Sammy Singer and the arrested arms merchant Cullen were of some help but Daris was desperate to speak to someone more closely connected to events. With little other choice, he turned to Callista's brother Ashura hoping he provide that link to the underground through his employer Taalcon. Seeking him out Daris received several nasty shocks, not the least of was his newfound belief that Callista had betrayed all that he believed in, had betrayed him. Hardening himself further he prepared to find the killers himself... his drive turning to obsession.

Not all went smoothly with his investigation. Unsure of who to trust, Daris tried to rely upon Sammy and Taalcon as his informants. Shikh could not help but be aware of the fact that he was one of the lead suspects but Daris tried his best to keep him or anyone else from knowing that he was the prime suspect. Unfortunately, Taalcon let the information slip to Callista. Confronted by her, Daris had no choice but to tell Callista the truth about his suspicions. Forced by his friendship with Callista, Daris found himself in Shikh's presence quite a bit. Strangely, the two enemies got along fairly well, despite the fact that they held widely different views of the world. Despite his occasional opportunities to vent out his frustrations with Shikh in their little veral sparring matches, the pressure finally got to Daris and one night he relaxed a little too much, embarrasing himself in front of Shikh and Callista at a very inopportune moment.

Finally things came began coming to a head. Accepting that it was extremely likely he would never be able to trace Lonestar and Talon's death back to Shikh, Daris never the less still found himself caught up in the events of Shikh and Callista's life. Forcing himself to at least try and be civil to the couple, Daris managed to get caught up in an old family argument. Trying to get his life and career back on track, there was more reason than ever to avoid the pair. Having learned his lesson earlier, Daris avoided driking to excess again, though he did spend a quiet evening in the tavern with a young cadet, Callista, and his old mentor Admiral Ashkevron... and evening that lead to a rather embarrassing misunderstanding.

Despite all the other distractions, life outside the academy and his investigation did continue. While the matter may have been pushed to the side in his thoughts while he was dealing with the deaths of his two friends, there still existed the problem of the alien infiltraitors on Carida. That problem was abruptly brought to the forefront of his concerns when he met an old acquaintance in the local starport, an acquaintance with a great deal of information he shouldn't have had, must especially knowledge about these unknown aliens and the destruction of the Dreadnaught Marius in a remote area of the Outer Rim. When this acquaintance, Valentine, started to tell the crowds of this information, Daris felt compelled to act. Despite his earnest belief that the man was about to start a panic, Daris was none the less disturbed that he had been forced to stun him to keep him silent. His doubts would soon grow to a terrible linger sense of guilt. Despite some concerns over his actions, Admiral Ashkevron agreed that the matter had to be kept a secret. When Valentine proved unwilling to be cooperative a quick field trial onboard the Victory Class Star Destroyer Triumph. The results were preordained and Valentine was sentenced to die, a sentence that Admiral Ashkevron chose to carry out at once. Sickened, Daris began to question what he had never questioned before, his dedication to the military... and more specifically his loyalty to the Admiral.

Despite his doubts, Daris continued on much as before. Having finally accepted that he would never be able to prove that Shikh was a cold blooded murderer, Daris turned his attention back to the Fate criminal organization... and more particular Kryst. With all the information he had gathered in his investigations, particularly from Sammy Singer, Daris wanted her brought to justice. She was the leader of one of the most dangerous criminal syndicates... but more importantly she had helped in the removal of the aliens from a top secret prison facility. After a long wait, the chance to strike a blow against Fate... and more importantly to Daris, to finally see Kryst in custody, arrived. Admiral Ashkevron assembled a strike force and headed to Corellia. Checking out one of the local cantinas, Daris and the rest of the team stummbled on to Kryst and some companions. Eager to make the arrest, Daris and the others got a nasty surprise. Springing into action, the strike team found their stun blasts stopped in thin air. Even more powerful blast could not reach their opponents. Faced by surprisingly hostile Force wielders, the team was ordered to retreat by the Admiral... who strangely stayed behind. Disheartened and demoralized by this turn of events, the team headed back to the shuttle, in shock not over the fact that they faced strange Force wielders, but at what some of them, including Daris, considered the Admiral's irrational behaviour during the entire affair.

To make his days even worse, the Admiral orders a full medical exam, physical and psychological, for the entire team. Relieved of duty until his exam is completed, Daris finds himself stuck in Medbay. Feeling the need to get back out there, being trapped in a hospital is not the most fun he has ever had. Nor does the examination go particularly smoothly. Already irriatable, the... strange wit of Doctor Jamison Scott does not go over well at all. Though the exam clears him to return to active duty, the doctor strongly recommends that Daris take a vaction... something that is suddenly sounding quite enjoyable... especially after he receives a rather unusal invitation to visit Alderaan with an attractive young woman, Talina Veran.
