The Woodhouse way
Kathryn Janeway walked with Chakotay down the corridor of Deck 4. She tugged at
the leash and he slid forward, his paws scraping the floor.
"Captain!" Tom exclaimed at the sight that met him as he stepped out
into the corridor. "You have a holographic dog. A lovely little maltese
terrier too. I'm an Iris setter type. I thought you liked Irish setters."
"I didn't think you could be that dense, Tom. And this is not about you,
get that?""
"Ah, now I see. Your Maltese is wearing Doc's holo-emitter."
Kathryn looked at the dog, bent down to pat him. "Chakotay is a very
obedient dog, aren't you, kitchi-koo?"
"Chakotay? Kitchi-koo?" Tom gasped.
"He has Chakotay's looks, don't you think?"
"A-and t-the tattoo," Tom stammered as he realised it was Chakotay's
face on the dog.
Kathryn commanded in a soft but firm voice, "Sittttttt!!!"
Then Tom's eyes popped as Chakotay sat down, his tail wagging and his tongue
hanging.
"Captain," he cried, tears in his eyes, "I think I should remind
you that Commander Chakotay died two months ago."
Kathryn looked sharply at the pilot, her eyes narrowing slowly.
"I know. But Chakotay…" She turned to the dog. "Roll over,
Chakotay, will you?"
Tom guffawed as the dog rolled over on his back.
"I don't suppose you could order him to play dead, will you, Captain?"
"Now, Tom, I can't let that happen a second time, can I? This cutie is
going to sit in his command chair next to me and he'll agree to everything I
say. Better still, he can sit on my lap. Right, kitchi-koo?"
Chakotay wagged his tail and panted like mad, his eyes full of affection for his
mistress.
Tom shook his head, still laughing. Captain Janeway poked his chest.
"I need a man in my life, Tom Paris," she replied bitingly, adding,
"and Chakotay is it."
"Sittt!!!!"
