Become a Community Leader
Written by: PureUni
Becoming a Community Leader is a job that should not be taken lightly, it may take up 20 or more hours per week, 2 or 3 hours a day. This job is for mature individuals only. Before you jump into anything be sure to check out all the links and information below. It is a great deal of work and can be tiring and sometimes frustrating. CL's may be exposed to pornography, excessive profanity, and hatred against racial, ethnic and religious groups.

On the UP side being a Community Leader volunteer can be very rewarding as you help homesteaders build their new homes on the web. There is a feeling of accomplishment and pride that goes along with helping others and building relationships and bonds with other CL's and Homesteaders.

What does a CL do?

*
Serve as an good example to other homesteaders. This includes having well put together home pages that fit the Area51 - Sci-fi theme, and having no content violations.

*    Look for sites in your theme or Area51 interests. You'll be looking for great sites that deserve recognition and awards, pages that don't meet the Geo Cities content guidelines, which you'll report to GeoCities so they can contact the site owners or remove the site if necessary; and content that doesn't match the theme of the Area51 neighborhoods. You will send greetings to homesteaders and try to assist those that seem to be in need of help.

*    Act as a liaison between your neighbors and GeoCities. Your member name and e-mail address will be posted in a prominent place within the neighborhood, so everyone will know whom to contact if they have questions or problems (although many hoods now use the GeoCities contact leader form). Homesteaders will think of you as their primary resource, for questions on everything from HTML problems to content guidelines to neighborhood themes. You may get between 10 and 20 messages a day, sometimes more! You are the homesteaders friend, the link between them and GeoCities and the neighborhood Liaisons, you will be Area51's "Good Will" ambassador.

*
Keep your own home page fresh, lively and updated. This is not mandatory for becoming or remaining a community leader, but, if you are being held up as leaders of the community, your own site should be a showcase. It doesn't have to be completely professional (although your fellow Community Leaders may be able to help you jazz it up a bit), but it should be updated, conform to content guidelines and to the theme of your neighborhood. If you're not sure if yours does, e-mail GeoCities or another Community Leader and they'll take a look. Be proud of your position as a Community Leader and reflect this in the quality of your site.

*
Recruit and nominate new Community Leaders by referring those who you think qualify to the Community Leader Application and vote on CL's waiting for acceptance. This is a big responsibility. Area51 needs good, active Cl's to keep things running smoothly. Voting for CL's to participate in the program should be taken seriously and your vote should be carefully thought out.

*
Submit reports to your Liaison or Group Managers. This is required from all Community Leaders. Your Liaison or Burb Manager will let you know how often reports are due. Your reports will include what you have been working on, what areas you have scanned and what violations you found, a general report of what you have been up to between reports.

*
Other Duties From time to time other jobs may come up that you will be asking to help with or volunteer for.

*    You MUST have a established homestead in Area51. Your site should meet your web server/s guideline requirements and fit in the Area51 - Sci-fi and fantasy theme.

*    You should have good HTML knowledge, there is no time, nor the available manpower to train you in HTML skills and you will be required to answer a lot of HTML homesteader questions.

*    You should be familiar with GeoCities utilities, how they work, and how to direct others to areas of assistance.

*    You need to have a willingness to help others and have good communication skills.

*    You must have the time and willingness to attend a two week CL training program. This could require up to 40 hours of your time. PLEASE do not apply if you do not have the time to spare.

*    You should have ample time available to spend on your CL duties. At least 2 or 3 hours per day that you can devote to your community leader position. Inactive Cl's are not a productive addition to the Area51 team.

*    You must be over 14 years of age. Those under 18 see the parental consent information below.
