Music has been a vocation as well as an avocation most of
my life. I began picking out tunes on the piano at age
four or five. I had my first piano lessons at age ten and
eleven. I took up the saxophone at age fourteen, joined
the high school band a short time later, by the time I
graduated from high school I was a member of the
Carnations, the area's pre-eminent rock and "top 40" band.
I thought I was a star at seventeen making records and
doing concert tours with this group. We even recorded in
the same studio that Elvis used in Nashville.
My musical
tastes changed, and I formed my own combo, Duke and the
Dynamics, and expanded the musical coverage to include
tunes of the big band era, a la Glenn Miller and Tommy
Dorsey. We still kept up with the "better" pop tunes of
the day.
I took another round of piano lessons, got my
act together so to speak, and reached the point where I was
able to make a living playing music full-time. I worked as
a solo pianist in the finer restaurants and lounges, and
often lead small combos usually featuring a female singer.
Playing music as a means of making a living has now become
secondary to my work as a videographer.
As far as the
enjoyment of listening to music is concerned, I like
classical, mood music...especially movie soundtracks, big
band music from the thirties and forties, some pop golden
oldies, and everything that Enya records.
