Application Layer

The OSI model defines the application layer as being the user interface. The OSI application layer is responsible for displaying data and images to the user in a human-recognizable format and to interface with the presentation layer below it.

Examples of applications that utilize the network are:

  • Telnet
  • FTP
  • Instant Message software (AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo)
  • Microsoft Windows File Shares
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (a web browser)
  • Network games like Doom 2, Call of Duty, UT 2004 (first-person 3D shooter video games)

Function of Layer Protocols Network Components
  • used for applications specifically written to run over the network
  • allows access to network services that support applications;
  • directly represents the services that directly support user applications
  • handles network access, flow control and error recovery
  • Example apps are file transfer,e-mail, NetBIOS-based applications
