General history

Kim Roland was born in Nova Alexandria in 2805. Her father and mother had moved there in an effort to get the family accepted among the nobles, a position that the family would have held long ago if not for her grandfather's and great-grandfather's distaste for Imperial policy and politics. The family owned Roland Technologies, a company second only to Sung Industries in capacity and revenue in HERC production, though placing almost all of its efforts into commercial rather than military applications. Life was good for the young girl, she was quiet, curious, and intelligent, and soaked up the attention this brought her. Her father intended for both her and her older brother to enter the military, hoping one of his children could ascend to the Imperial Knights, securing the family's position. In 2818 her family was killed when a faulty construction HERC toppled from a new building, the result of her father putting the business second to his personal ambition. Somehow she had escaped any serious injury in the accident and went to live with her uncle and grandmother. Her uncle closed down the estate in Nova Alexandria and moved the headquarters back to the main production facility in Australia. She lived there and worked with HERCs until 2828, when, despite her uncle's protests, she followed Joel into the TDF. Joel, however, had disappeared and she did not see or hear from him until a month after the Cybrids returned. When Joel reappeared it was with an invitation to join a small, covert unit, the Shadow Dragons, she jumped at the opportunity. Several months later the decision was made to send the squad to Mars, without Joel and several veteran pilots. The squad established its base on Mars and started expanding. In late 2830 the pressures of command became too much and she decided to leave and return to Earth.

Back on Earth she bounced around as a volunteer with TDF units until 2833 when she left and returned to her uncle. The TDF, who had been defending the production facility during the Siege, pulled their forces to use elsewhere. A Cybrid attack on the poorly defended facility ended with the plant destroyed, her uncle dead, and her barely alive. She found herself on Mars again, recovering and guilt-ridden over her failure. She returned to Earth and isolated herself until early 2834 when Joel talked her into going on an information gathering mission to Mercury.
