I do not own Gundam Wing or any characters in it. Gundam Wing belongs to Sotsu, Sunrise, ANB, and other rich people. I do not own I Don't Know You Anymore, it's by Savage Garden. Mozart's K.626 Requiem belongs to Mozart. I am not making any money off of this, and I have no money so don't sue me. On the other hand, I do own whatever random side characters I come up with.

/I know I let you down
Again and again
I know I never really treated you right
I've paid the price
I'm still paying for it every day/
I was lying on the library floor with Heero leaning over me. “Duo! Duo?” There was increasing panic in his voice.
I opened my eyes and glared at him. My voice was as hard as iron and colder than ice when I answered. “Duo Maxwell is dead. He died when you betrayed him.”
He gaped at me.
I shoved myself off the floor and made no effort to hide my limp as I went back to the kitchen. I needed some water. He followed behind.
“Duo, I don't understand,” he said.
I pulled a glass out of the cupboard and filled it from the filter. “My name is Davin McDonnell. Please stop calling me Duo.”
He looked at me in confusion, shock, and even a touch of sadness. The expression was most prominent in his eyes but it was also on his face. The cold, iron hard mask I was familiar with had finally cracked. “I really don't understand, Du… Please…” His voice broke. He stuttered and trailed off, unsure of what he wanted to say, to ask. Unsure of me, and his footing.
I looked at him impassively, waiting. And then the phone rang. I downed the water and set the glass down in the sink.
I left him to answer the phone. I clicked it on, and smiled as Drew's face appeared before mine again. “Hey, Drew,” I said, smiling lightly at him. “What's up?”
“Hi, Dav. Mum requests that you come anyway, and to bring your company. I kind of mentioned the nightmare in passing conversation, and she threw a conniption fit.” He was cut off.
“I heard that Andrew Ferguson! You mind your manners, and get Davin up here now!” Mama Elena's voice rang strongly in the background. My smile grew broader as Drew winced.
“You see what I mean?” he asked. “Dav, please come. Save me from this.” His tone was pleading, although his eyes were sparkling. And then they went cold. “What is he doing there?”
I shrugged, feeling Heero's eyes burning a hole in my back. “I said I was having company over, Drew. And that's all I said,” I paused and added, “we'll be there in a few hours. See you soon, and warn Mama Elena and Daddy Rob. Let's get most of the exploding over with before I arrive.”
Drew nodded. “See you then,” he said. “Ta for now.” We both hung up at the same time and I turned around. A wicked smile almost danced over my lips.
“We're going on a little trip,” I told Heero. I moved past him and went and found my shoes, coat, and car keys. When I returned he was standing where I left him, but he was sputtering away on something in Japanese, a language I didn't understand well enough to follow. I'd learned some of the more common phrases, like hai, baka, and ai shiteru, but nothing beyond them.
“I take it you're ready to go?” I asked, coolly. I ushered him out, into my car, and drove off silently. I remained silent until he began to speak.
“Du..” he trailed off again and I fought off annoyance that he couldn't remember that I wasn't Duo Maxwell anymore. “Where are we going and why are we going there?” he said finally.
“We're going to Drew's family's house, and we're going because we've been invited. We're going because Mama Elena said to, and hell will become a vacation spot for tourists before I disappoint her.”
“Why do you call her Mama Elena?”
“Because the Ferguson's adopted me years ago. They're my family now, even if my last name is different.”
“What do they know about you, and about us?” Heero said, almost looking afraid.
“They know everything about me, and about the deceased Duo Maxwell. As for you, well they know all about your betrayal. As for an 'us', there never was an 'us.' You made that abundantly clear. You made it perfectly clear that I was nothing but a convenient screw for a one night stand.” My tone was bitter, and fury was starting to throb at my temples.
Heero looked blank and shell shocked. I fell silent again, reaching one hand out and turning the radio on loud enough to prohibit any further conversation.
He looked as if he were thinking, as if he wanted to say something as well, but didn't know where to begin. He also looked worried. He deserved to worry. I knew Drew, Mama Elena, and Daddy Rob all had a lot that they wanted to say to him but hadn't because Duo Maxwell was dead, and they'd never been formally introduced to Duo Maxwell, not to public knowledge anyway.
I was perfectly happy to spend the roughly three hour trip from my home in Kincardine, just northwest of Tain, to Dunfermline in that strained quiet. I occasionally sang along to the radio softly and that always made him jerk his head around to look at me. Heero had never heard me sing before and never knew that music was one of the few things that had helped me retain my sanity through my entire insane life, but especially in the last four years.
We arrived, and after pulling into the driveway I leapt out of the car and hurried up to the front door. I swung it open, without knocking, and walked in. “Mama Elena, Daddy Rob, we're here,” I called out. Mama Elena burst out of the kitchen and gave me a huge hug.
“Are you all right?” she whispered into my ear.
“I'm better now that I'm with you,” I replied, honestly. I heard Heero, come hesitantly into the door behind me. Mama Elena let me go as she glared at him.
“How dare you come and bother him after all you did!” she shrieked. I stepped hurriedly away, praying for my ear drums. Mama Elena has better lungs and volume than a drill sergeant. She approached him and pulled him into the house and firmly shut the door behind him. Mama had no intentions of letting him escape before she'd had her say.
Daddy Rob came down the stairs, grinning a Highlander's mad grin. He gave me as warm a greeting as Mama Elena had and then turned to Heero. I almost felt sympathy for him, but not really. He deserved everything he was going to get for his betrayal, and probably more.
Drew and Adam casually walked out of the kitchen. Adam's smile matched Daddy Rob's. Drew handed me a chocolate chip cookie and glared at Heero. He was finally going to have a chance to say everything he'd wanted to since that final mission. Yes, the Ferguson's were going to have a field day with this.
“Guess what?” Drew whispered into my ear. “Re called. She has time off, she'll be arriving today.” I let loose my smile. Maybe this would be a good day after all.
