C. S. Lewis was a philosopher and scholar but is perhaps best loved for his Narnia books for young people. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a stand-alone, youth adventure novel. By stand-alone I mean it's characters are superbly drawn and the story so engaging that many people who first read the book in adolescence find themselves re-reading it as adults!

From Amazon.com::
In brief, four children travel repeatedly to a world in which they are far more than mere children, and everything is far more than it seems. Richly told, populated with fascinating characters, perfectly realized in detail of world and pacing of plot, and profoundly allegorical, with continual threading of the timeless issues of good and evil, and faith and hope. Very Highest Recommendation. The Chronicles of Narnia is a true masterpiece of the world's literature, and I have never met anyone who has read any of the seven volumes and feels otherwise. This is one of the very few sets of books that should be read three times: in childhood, early adulthood, and late in life.
