Introduction

Who am I?

My name is Alain Vollant, and I was born in Québec City. At the age of nine, my family moved to Sept-Iles (Seven Islands) where I spent the rest of my youth. During those years, I had the opportunity to travel on the northern shore of the St. Lawrence River (from Tadoussac to LaRomaine), and to become familiar with the Montagnais Indians’ culture.

At the age of 21, noticing that the chances of getting a job in my hometown were next to nothing, I opted for the only solution left to me: the Canadian Armed Forces. Once I joined, I was sent to CFB St. Jean, Québec for my Recruit Course (14 weeks of HELL). Then I had to take a nine month English Course.

Once I graduated from the English Course, I was sent to CFB Borden, Ontario so I could be taught my trade (Supply Tech). Right after I graduated from this course I was transferred to CFB Halifax, and then on to the HMCS Algonquin. During my time in Halifax, I visited some exotic locations. To name but a few; Palma de Malorca (Spain), Puerto Rico, Ismir (Turkey), Paris, Amien, Toulon and Marseil (France), and, of course, the Adriatic!

After my time in Halifax was done, I was sent to the HMCS Radisson, a reserve unit based in Trois-Rivières. But I must tell you that I can’t wait to be back at sea… After all, I am a sailor! Of course, all the travelling I’ve done so far has made me conscious of how lucky I was, and how great it is to be Canadian.

How did I come to like SF?

Discounting a few short stories here and there, what really introduced me to SF was, at first, two series; Perry Rhodan (A German series that has lasted since 1961) and the books of Steven Comwell (Spaceships from 200 AD to 2100 AD, Spacewrecks, etc), and a few Bandes-Dessinées (graphic novels) such as Yoko Tsuno, Kronos, Krane le Guerrier, and Luc Orient.

Then came TV series such as Space 1999, Star Trek, Robotech, Capitain Flam (Captain Futur), Albator (Captain Harlock), and Battlestar Galactica. At last, I was exposed to roleplaying games such as Star Frontiers, Battletech, Megatraveller, Robotech, Rifts, and 2300 AD.

Recently, though, I became sick of Battletech… probably because of the way they handled their story, I don’t know. And believe it or not, I never liked the Star Wars movies, but that is another story.

Why did I decide to do this?

The first time I read about 2300 AD™, I was astonished by the level of detail used to describe the universe. The whole thing seemed so close to reality that I felt transported into that future.

So here I was, reading everything I could find about 2300 AD™; the colonies, the ships, the Kafers, etc. Then I came upon Earth/Cybertech Sourcebook, and I must say that I was disappointed. The book was, at best, incomplete. Aside from the portion dedicated to the US, the descriptions of the world seemed two-dimensional… Even the part describing the cybernetics was weak.

The chapter describing Canada was so insubstantive, it was insulting. So when I noticed that 2300 AD™ was on the "Net," I decided to do this little project for my own satisfaction, and, if I'm successful, for others’ satisfaction as well.

What are my objectives?

I would like you to understand first that what I'm trying to do here is correct the picture concerning Canada in 2300 AD. To do this, I intend to take into account all the previously published information related to 2300 AD™ that I have at my disposal.

This means I will follow some basic rules:

  1. What GDW said happened, DID happen.
  2. Therefore, the material published by GDW will be taken into account first.
  3. The Earth/Cybertech Sourcebook and Colonial Atlas have the highest priority, even over the background included in the 2300 AD Boxed Set.
  4. Challenge magazine is next in priority - excepting the article on the North American Research League, because of the contradictory information it contains.
  5. The issues of the 2300 AD Resource and Traveller Digest.
  6. All other printed publications.
  7. And lastly, the various internet resources.

It is not in my intention to rewrite what as already been said about Canada, but to fill in the blanks, go in depth on some subjects, and to make the connections between Twilight 2000 2nd Edition and 2300 AD.

If you think that I've been inaccurate, if you disagree with me, or if you want to give me your ideas and opinions, please write me at vollant@hotmail.com.
