Astronomy

For a number of years I have hadan interest in astronomy and space-related subjects. A have been an active member of the Phonix Astronomical Society since it's formation early in 1998, and prior to that an active member of the Wellington Astronomical Society. My interests in astronomy are verey broad.

Below are a number of photos on astronomy related topics. All photos were taken by myself except the first on of Comet Hale Bopp.

Sunset at the Phoenix Astronomical Society Dark sky site in the Wairarapa, Southern North Island, New Zealand. The photo was taken in Febuary, 2000. An Olympus OM2000 camera was used with a 28mm lens.

Comet Hale Bopp. This photo was given to me by a colleuge at the Institute of Geleogical and Nuclear Sciences. I believe it was taken by an unknowen photographer in the Unites States in March 1997.

The following photographs are of Stardate Convention. Stardate is New Zealand's main astronomy convention and has been running for well over a decade. I have been attending the North Island Stardate convention for a number of years. There is also a South Island Stardate convention which takes place near Staverly, on the Canterbury Plains.

A large pair of binoculars, which is essentially two newtonian telescopes of the same focal length paired together. The eyepeices are in the middle - about where the white t-shrit is draped over the instrument. The observer looks downwards and is using both eyes to observe with, which is a somewhat more relaxing position to observe in being less strain on the neck.

The following two shots are evening shhots taken by myself.

This is a photo of a conjunction of the Moon and Venus, which took place on June, 1997. I also managed to inadvertently catch comet Hale Bopp (just) which is arrowed. The photo was taken with an old Ricoh camera with a 50mm fixed lense at f1.4. The exposure was for 3 seconds with ASA200 film.

Another sunset in the Wairarapa from the Phoenix Astronomical Society's dark sky site. It is in about 1 hours drive frrom Wellington.
