Things I Believe In

In the future, each of these section will have short essays (or something like that) by me, as well as appropriate links. I just wanted to get this page up, so I didn't forget the idea. Each of these subjects touch a precious part of my life (ie, someone or something I love).

Save the Dragons, etc,

These may seem silly, but I believe that these creature still exist; be it in the remotest parts of our Earth or in a parallel universe. Perhaps they exist even closer to us. A part of me believes that some humans are not really humans but Elves, Dragons, and other fantasy creatures "trapped" in a human form.

Laugh or believe but check out these sites.

Free Speech/Censorship

This is something I feel VERY strongly about. I understand parents trying to protect their kids from "objectional" material, but I object when that protection becomes fanatical and begins to infringe on my life. I was blessed with very open and understanding parents. They may not have liked the music and books that I did, but they respected my right to read and listen to it. I may not like the same things other people do, but I respect their right to like it. Just because I think something is "objectional" does not mean I have the right to prevent others from having it.

I had an experience with censorship in high school. I had an English teacher who had a policy of keeping our papers for us in a folder in her classroom. At the beginning of the semester she gave each student a folder and told us to decorate them "with song lyrics, quotes, whatever we thought was appropriate." I decorated mine with lyrics from my favorite songs, including one with strong sexual overtones. A few weeks later this teacher asked me to stay after class. After class, she handed me my folder and told me it was "inappropriate," threatened to send it to my parents and said that I had a new folder. I told her that my parents knew what I listened to and didn't mind. I took my old folder home, showed it to my parents, and told them the whole story. They wrote a letter to the teacher with a copy to the principal, objecting to the treatment of me and my folder. They said "As her parents, we do not believe in censoring her thoughts or written words. We will defend her and anyone else's right to speak and write freely." They also asked that the teacher be more specific about what was allowed to be put on the folders. I heard that future classes of this teacher were given specific guidelines concerning their folders. I admit that I did put those lyrics on the folder in an attempt to shock the teacher and apparently I succeeded, but the entire experience taught me of the value of free speech.

I support free speech and anti-censorship.

Disabilities

This is one I don't know much about but I still support it. My mom has a disability (a long story that is hers to tell, if she ever wants to) and she has run into many problems concerning that disability. She is a strong woman, despite the disability and I greatly admire her and am very proud of her. She has been through a lot in her life and it is unfair that some people can't see past the disability to the strong and very capable woman that she is.

Veterans

My special concern is Vietnam Veterans. My dad is a Vietnam Vet. I am just starting to understand what he went through both in Vietnam and when he returned home. I am very proud of him and all the other vets from all wars who have pulled their lives together and gone on. These men and women need all the support they can get.

Literacy

What must life be like when you can't read? It must be horrible. I love reading and I can't imagine not being able to escape in a book every once in a while. But there is a worse aspect of not being able to read. If you couldn't read, you couldn't do even simple, everyday things such as reading street signs or ordering a meal in a restaurant. We must all do our best to help, encourage and teach those who can't read.

Pro Choice

This one is pretty simple. It's my body and whatever I choose to do with it is my business. This applies to everyone but in this case, especially women. Personally, I probably would't have an abortion but would give the child up for adoption. Still, I want to have the choice. At this time, I have yet to find a pro-choice organization that fits me, so there are no links for this topic.

Anti-racism

We can not help what race we are born as and underneath that color we are all the same (blood, tissue, bones). At times I wish I could turn everyone purple, but then I suppose people would be segregated or would segregate themselves according to what shade of purple they are. In any case, racism is wrong and in my view, pointless. We should be judged by who we are and how we act not what color we are.

Freedom Of Choice (in general)

What can I say here? Doesn't the topic kind of say it all? I want to be free to make my own choices. I am an adult. Doesn't that entitle me to abide by my own rules? Now, I'm not saying I don't have to obey laws because I do. But there are rules set by society that are pointless and, if I wish to be accepted even slightly, I must obey. I dislike this. I just want to be free to be me.
