Armenelos
Tolkien Fan Fiction

This is my small but steadily growing collection of fan fiction based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. All works are based on the book canon rather than the films. These works can also be found at Henneth Annun.

Updates: Everything's that's new and improved on this page.

The Stories:
The Age of the Trees:

Song of the Waters: In the time of the Trees, the Teleri leave Cuiviénen, and a young Círdan first lays eyes upon the Sea that will become his destiny.

Cuivië: In the age before the Sun and Moon, an Ent awakens to the presence of two Elves.

The First Age:

The Flower of Vinyamar: After the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, a young Elf-lord of Gondolin assumes his dead brother's title and takes a new name.

Steadfast: Cast up on the shores of Nevrast, Voronwë ponders his fate.

Finding Courage: In Gondolin's last days, Glorfindel must find the courage to defend his people against the shadow that threatens their escape. Winner of the 2004 Mithril Award for Best Action/Adventure.

Until The End: A faithful servant remains at Turgon's side as Gondolin falls around them. A companion piece of sorts to "Finding Courage."

Gold Like Tears: Spanning three Ages, the story of an ill-starred golden bead as it passes from one hand to the next. Finalist for the 2004 Mithril Awards, Best Story Focusing on Elves.

Across Dark Waters: An AU look at the passage to Mandos, partly based on Greek mythology, as Maeglin gets what's coming to him. Note: this story was officially reviewed at Open Scrolls on October 24, 2003. The review can be read in its entirety here.

Also a runner-up for the 2004 Mithril Awards, Best Silmarillion and Best Drama.

The Second Age

Envinyanta: Glorfindel is reborn and returns to Middle-earth to aid Elrond and Gil-galad in their war against Sauron, yet must face the knowledge that he is now the only surviving member of the House of the Golden Flower. The sequel to "Finding Courage."

Begetting Day: A young Lindir becomes curious about Glorfindel's begetting day on the eve of Gil-galad's first visit to Imladris.

A Ranga of Wool: When a sixteen-year old boy is sent to the market of Rómenna to buy wool to make a cloak for his mariner brother, he finds first love instead. Written for the 2003 Henneth-Annun Market Day in Númenor Challenge.

Aglarrâma: On the eve of the Downfall, a shipwright of Númenor watches his last, best creation depart with the Great Armament. Finalist for the 2004 Mithril Awards, Best Story Focusing on Men.

The Eleventh Hour: Why did Tar-Míriel not board one of the nine ships and escape Númenor with the other Faithful? Finalist for the 2003 Mithril Awards, Best Drama, and winner, Honorable Mention. Note: the version of "The Eleventh Hour" which appears here is not the version that was judged. It has since been edited, with much new material added.

Renuvammet: As Elendil struggles to write an account of the Downfall, he receives a timely visitor.

I Bequeath: Círdan the Shipwright receives Narya from Gil-galad on the eve of the Last Alliance. Vignette.

Magnum Opus: At the end of the Second Age, an Elven minstrel witnesses the dissolution of Gil-galad's kingdom and composes his own elegy for the fallen High King of the Noldor. Runner-up for the 2004 Mithril Awards, Best Characterization/Minor Character.

The Third Age:

In Absentia: For eighty years, Valandil son of Isildur has traveled to the Gladden Fields in search of his father's remains. However, this year will be different. New!

Coavalta: The spirit of a houseless Elf trapped in the Mere of Dead Faces returns the gaze of a curious mortal. Runner-up for the 2004 Mithril Awards, Best Short Story or Vignette.

Not For Pride Alone: Glorfindel and prince Eärnur of Gondor face the Witch King of Angmar at the battle of Fornost. Winner of the 2004 Mithril Awards, Best Characterization/Ensemble.

For Pity's Sake The Mirkwood sentries assigned to watch Gollum take pity on him, with horrific results.

Love in a Time of Fading: Nénuwen, a Nandorin maiden living in the valley of Rivendell, is courted by a member of Elrond's household. Bittersweet fluff, set directly before and after the Ring War.

Leave Us Not In Darkness: Saruman's most vile deed is brought to light. The Lord of the Rings book canon, rated PG-13 for themes of rape and violence.

A Silence Covered in Stone: At the end of the Ring War, Thranduil and Celeborn meet in the ruins of Dol Guldur and reaffirm their friendship in the midst of the Shadow's last terrifying secret.

Humor:

Fëanor: The Owner's Guide and Maintenance Manual: For those of you who always wanted your very own Noldorin genius, he's finally available in a brand-spanking new limited edition! The very first Owner's Guide based on a Silmarillion character, featuring that lovable spirit of Fire himself and all his glitches. Written with the approval of the creator of the series.

Glorfindel: The Owner's Guide and Maintenance Manual: The golden hero is finally here in a double edition--yes, both incarnations of him, for those who can't get enough of Elves who glow in the dark. Asfaloth sold separately.

Making Verses: What the Elves of Rivendell really thought of Bilbo's "Eärendil" poem. Warning: cheeky Elves ahead.
