How to connect to Sky Internet using OS/2 Warp® v3 and the Bonus Pack

(Note: recommend for Manila, Philippines residents only).
  1. OS/2 Warp setup - make sure you have setup OS/2 Warp properly. You should be able to run your applications (DOS, OS/2, Windows if you have it installed).
  2. Bonus Pack setup - use the installation program of the Bonus Pack. Choose the item "IBM Internet Connection". After installation, if you have OS/2 Warp v3 (Red Spine) installed, please ask for and apply the IBM PPP update from your OS/2 vendor. This update will bring the version of the Bonus Pack dialer up to Warp v3 (Blue Spine or Full Pack). You will also need to apply the IBM TCP/IP update.
  3. SkyInternet subscription - apply for a Sky Internet subscription. You may call [63](2)411-2000 for the customer service line, or [63](2)635-5601 x4309 for subscription information.
  4. Configuration - on Warp's desktop, double-click on the IBM IAK folder icon to open it. Double click on the IBM Internet Connection for OS/2 folder to open it. Double click on the Internet Utilities folder. Double-click on the Dial Other Internet Providers object. There is an online document which can answer a lot of questions, and can basically teach you how to configure your Warp setup. See below for a list of recommended settings.
  5. IBM Dial-up for TCP/IP

    Item Value Description
*Name: (any name here, usually symbolic for your provider, like SkyINet) This is a required field, although this does not seem to be used by any application.
Description need a hint? (this doesn't seem to do anything anway)
Login ID: (your login / user id goes here, like 'jose' or 'paolo', without the quotes) This is the login or user id that your provider will give to you, entered exactly (usually all lower-case letters) the way they say it.
Password: ********** (this is not viewable) Must be entered also exactly (usually lower-case); confirm from your provider if these are all lower-case letters.
Phone number 411-2222 or 910-2222 Dial up phone number; try either and use which one is better for you (i.e. line quality, etc. etc.) depending on your location
Login sequence: NONE The keyword 'NONE' will utilize CHAP/PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) automatically supplying the login id and password values from the fields above
Connection type PPP Uses Point to Point Protocol, provided by the PPP update mentioned above.
Inactivity timeout option I recommend 5 This will automatically disconnect your dialup connection, when no activity occurs for that time period
Your IP address: Should be left blank; PPP will dynamically assign you your IP address for the session
Destination IP address: 206.101.197.225 The IP address of the gateway machine; confirm this with SkyInternet
    Netmask: 255.255.255.0 The subnet mask
*MRU Size: 1500 The default value should be okay, host will attempt to send packets of that size, but bigger is better. Maximum should be around 4096.
VJ Compression Checked Required. SkyInternet's setup uses this.
*Domain nameserver: 206.101.197.230 or 204.70.57.242 Should be confirmed with Sky Internet (choose one only)
Your host name: (can be left blank) This is the identifier for your PC when you are directly connected to the internet, not used for dial-up setups.
*Your Domain Name: skyinet.net This is required
Mail Gateway: mail.skyinet.net Should not be mail2.skyinet.net, as one tech-support guy at skyinet told me. It seems that they changed to mail2 then back to mail. For email client sofware this information should be in the Send settings notebook page. For Netscape's Navigator for OS/2, this information should be in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server field of the Servers settings page.
POP Mail Server: pop.skyinet.net Used to be mail.skyinet.net until they changed it. For email client software (e.g. PMMail) this information should be in the Receive settings notebook page. For Netscape's Navigator for OS/2, this information should be in the Incoming Mail (POP) Server field of the Servers settings page.
    Reply domain: skyinet.net
Reply (Mail) ID: (should be the same as your login ID)
POP Login ID: (should be the same as your login ID)
POP Password ********(should be the same as your login password)

I can't discuss all the possible values for the Modem setup page, due to the multitudes of modems out on the market. Try the drop down list if your modem is supported by the IAK; otherwise a safe bet would be to choose 'Hayes compatible' if your modem is not listed.

For the U.S. Robotics Sportster 28.8kbps modems, you can choose the USRobotics Courier HST DS.

  6. Double-click on the system menu to close the settings page, and click on Save to update your settings. Do not press Alt-F4! Doing this may cause you to lose your updates unnecessarily!
  7. Click on the Dial pushbutton to test your setup. For any corrections, click on the Modify Entry pushbutton.
