Wynterfyre's Wolf Page
Through the centuries, we have projected onto the wolf
The qualities we most despise and fear in ourselves
~~Barry Lopez,Of Wolves And MenWhen I was young I believed all the hype and falsehoods about wolves and what they stood for. Every little child knows that they are bad and evil, at least they always believe what their parents read to them from the nursery stories. I did not find out until I was older, I'd like to say around 7 or 8 that wolves are not the blood thirsty animals that people like to think they are.
Wolf
....The name alone sends shivers of mystery and awe through a person. The howl, tickles the spine and raises the hair, but at the same time brings tears to eyes that are sensitive. Wolf, in today's world is a lonely and powerful word. Have you ever heard of the tag, "He/She is a lone wolf?" In effect wolves by nature are not loners, they live in packs: a family group. They are very social animals, always keeping in contact with one another, either by touching, sniffing, or howling.
The boring stuff....Classification:- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Chordata
- Class: Mammalia
- Order: Carnivora
- Family: Canidae
- Genus: Canis
- Species: Canis lupus...The grey wolf
The Grey Wolf once roamed most of North America: almost 3/4th of the land. Their range now is less than 1/3 of their original territory. The population was reduced by men through hunting, trapping, and slaughtering all in the name of GREED and FEAR. Most of their population now resides in Canada and Yellow Stone Park. There is a major project going on in Yellow Stone Park to reintroduce wolves back into the area. ((More info later))
The Grey Wolf is the largest member in the canine family. Most of them reach six feet in length and stand around three feet at the shoulder. In this Family there is sexual dimorphism. That means a difference in the males and females. The females are smaller than the males and not as bulky. Average weight of one of these animals is from 70-155 pounds. The coat is a thick, dependable pelage ranging from shades of grey to white, black, beige, reddish, and tan. The eyes of a wolf vary from a light yellow-gold to a rich, warm chocolate. Even the faces of these animals are just as different as their coats. Every one of these animals are different in their own unique and special way. Each member of the pack knows its place. First and foremost is the ALFA pair...the leaders of the pack, most times the only breeding pair. Then comes the BETA wolves, second in command. Then the pups and juveniles. Lastly, the OMEGA wolves: the lowest in rank...last in all things.
Wolves are also a very vocal animal. Sounds vary from growls to howls...*S* When used in connection with body posture, it is a language. The howl is especially what these great animals are known for. The howl is used for many specific purposes. It can be used to bring the pack together or threaten other wolves in the territory by making it seem like there are more wolves than there really is. They do this by varing their call pitch. Every member of the pack has their own distinct call so they can be recognized from one another. The howl can also be celebratory or a song of sadness.
((Just sit right on back, I am not done with the information...still coming))
This is not a picture of a wolf, but Isis did look like one. Isis was my first dog. I treasured her in all that I did. I always looked forward to coming home and having that face meet me at the door everyday. She developed a smile in her daily life. I had her only for 14 monthes before she died. This picture was taken the day she had to be put down. A minature wolf and she was loved dearly. This page is for you dear one, may you always look out for those who loved you. I miss you and I know there are others who miss your shining face and those flashing golden eyes. Take care sweet one and may you guard the gates of Summerland.
I have chosen to support one of the Sawtooth Wolves, MOTOMO(more info to come on these animals)
