This page features two of the ships you can fly in Descent Freespace. I'll try to add more ships and info as time permits.
Ship Name: | Hercules | |
Ship Class: | Heavy Fighter
Max Velocity: | 50 | |
Length: | 20M | |
Maneuverability: | Average
Armor: | Medium | |
Gun Mounts: | 6 | |
Missile Banks: | 2 (No Tsunami or Harbingers) |
The Hercules is my favorite fighter. It's big. It's heavily armored for a fighter. It carries more guns and missiles than any other fighter.
It only has average maneuverabilty and speed, however, so you have to fight smart if you find yourself engaged by smaller, more
agile craft. The Hercules is an ideal bomber escort fighter. It's hordes of missiles can quickly cut a path through defending fighters. It's lack of turning ability doesn't come into play as much when the enemy fighters are concentrating on the bombers. These same factors make it a good bomber interceptor as well, especially since the heavy armament of the Hercules is powerful enough to destroy enemy bombers with ease. However, if you have a large area to defend, you may want to use a Valkyrie instead. Large amounts of firepower don't matter if you arrive too late. |
Ship Name: | Zeus | |
Ship Class: | Stealth Bomber
Max Velocity: | 55 | |
Length: | 20M | |
Maneuverability: | Poor
Armor: | High | |
Gun Mounts: | 4 (Can carry Prometheus, but not the Banshee)
Missile Banks: | 3 (Cannot carry Hornets or Harbingers) |
The Zeus comes with the Silent Threat expansion pack. It is a useful addition,
but one that doesn't provide an end all attack solution.
Despite its "Poor" manuverabilty rating, it handles fairly well for a bomber, though I wouldn't advise dogfighting a Dragon in one. It's limited stealth capability allows you to get a little closer before the enemy picks you up on their scanners and start throwing large amounts of missiles and energy blasts your way. The Zeus lacks the heavy punch of the Ursa, but is probably a good choice against cruisers with heavy fighter escort. |
