Who Is Mavik Felna?

So, you want to know who Mavik Felna is. Well, I sprang from the fertile imagination of Mark Anderson about 1983. In ’83 Mark found a copy of a wonderful comic book anthology called Albedo Anthropomorphics. Produced by Steve Gallacci the book contained a story by the same, titled "Erma Felna, EDF". Mark fell in love with Erma and her Confederation instantly and has been a dedicated fan of Mr. Gallacci ever since. That first Albedo #0, read through on the way home, inspired the creation of Maverick Felna.

However, by the time Albedo #2 had arrived Maverick just didn’t seem like the right name. Catina Selina Felna was already on the scene by this time, as was her sister Chiffon Selina, the assassin. Taking a look at some of the names in the stories Mark dropped a few letters from Maverick and came up with Mavik, which fits much better if I do say so.

Born on Dorthantii to Theoak and Riana Felna, Mavik grew up with a psychologically damaged father. Though Theoak Felna was distant and suffered from severe flash backs he managed to instill a powerful morality and sense of duty into the young Mavik. As soon as he was able Mav joined the Dorthantii Homeguard as an infiltrator, waiting for a slot in the pilot program. Though only a moderately successful student Mavik still managed to impress his senior officers enough that when a pilot’s position became available in the Extraplanetary Defense Forces he was recommended for the slot.

Near the end of a successful stay at the EDF Academy Mav meet Catina Selina, a young command and control officer. After a long and uneventful courtship Mav finally managed to convince Cat to give in and marry him. A few years after that, war broke out.

Towards the end of the war, while Mav and Cat were serving on the same VLSCV, tragedy struck. In support of the liberation of Calican the VLSCV was ambushed by ILR cruisers after it dropped its support craft. The ship was lost with all hands.

Mavik left the service at the conclusion of the war, despondent at the loss of his wife. Though drug abuse is almost non-existent in the ConFed it can happen. Syntheflex-A is a medical pain reliever with some mildly hypnotic qualities. It is also a severe depressant and easily obtainable.

After a year of failing at his own business as an aeronautical engineer and turning into a truly pathetic individual, Mav found some reason to try again. The ILR maintained a special internment camp well after the end of the war. It’s existence was mere rumor but some information fell into Mav’s hands that would prove it’s existence. But even more than that, a prisoner’s list was part of the information and it contained a very important name.

Unfortunately, before he could act on this information, Mavik was captured by a bounty hunter. Finding himself in the clutches of the man who had destroyed his father, seeking revenge for his father’s escape, Mav lost all hope.

Well, the bounty hunter, after a talk with one of Mav’s friends who had been missing since childhood, rescued Mav and his cousin Erma. The four of them, with the help of the bounty hunter’s and Bobby’s ships, found and broke into the prison, liberating over one hundred prisoners, including Catina Felna and her one year old son, Vamis.

Since then Little Erma and Rosewind have joined the family and the adventures have continued to pile up. I’ll leave it there and let Mark tell you a little about himself.
