The Three Musketeers

Welcome to "Dumas in Paris"!

Alexandre Dumas, one of the most revered authors of fiction ever, has been known to create some of the most wonderfully designed characters. Flawed, imperfect, and exceedingly brash, they've become legends for being human. Lovely, isn't it?

His humor and whimsical touch to his stories, combined with a flourish of drama, adventure, and romance, is what we're trying to embody here in this e-mail run freeform game, hosted by Yahoogroups. To join, go to this address:

Once you've subscribed, you're ready to continue! Keep reading below to see what you need to do next.

The VERY first thing you must do is read the rules. It will make posting a lot smoother, and should help you understand just how the game functions. And though I consider myself somewhat laid back, I'm not afraid to remove people that blatantly disregard these rules. So read them, eh? :)

There are five groups for you to choose from. First and foremost, of course, are the Musketeers...the "heroes." However, keep in mind that they are not the pure shining image of good! They're just the main focus of Dumas' stories. The Cardinal's guards, meanwhile, are not evil. They are merely in opposition most times with the Musketeers. These two sides are constantly bickering and starting up duels. The third faction will be known as the Fleurs. This will be a lady-based squadron (no men allowed) of female swashbucklers. Though they are not official yet, their leader Luna Vinzinni is struggling to form a legion of bodyguards to protect the queen. The fourth faction you can join, is ... none of the above! It would include any roles, such as King Louis XIV, a blacksmith, a lackey...whatever you like! Last, but definitely not least, are the villains. Need I say more? Also, should you grow bored, you are always welcome to create more than one character. After you've decided on a faction, click on the character creation link down below.

So you've got a character now, and the rules are understood! What next? If you're coming into the game after it's already started, it's recommended that you read up on a few of the previous posts on the Yahoo site. There will also be a storyline set up so you can read what's going on.

After that, send me an e-mail (to pyiiiii@yahoo.com) listing any IM devices and addresses that you might use. These will be added to the contacts page, which you should browse through. Add people to your lists, and don't be afraid to contact them for joint posts. This is a very friendly game, and is meant to be fun. The more people you plot with, the better!

Once you're a member, feel free to expand on your character and add what you can to the list. Send in any pictures or information or whatever you like, and I'll put it on the site. And now that all this is out of the way, Here's an explanation of the four factions!

The Musketeers

The Musketeers are probably the most easy character to adapt to. They love wine, women, and DUELS! The favorite tavern of the Musketeers is Le Grenouille Bleu. Their captain is Monsieur DeTreville, who will station the Musketeers and send them to various locations. Your first duty is to the king, and the motto is "All for one, and one for all." The Musketeer's tunic is royal blue with silver trim. Most frequently they engage themselves in taunting the Cardinal's Guards.

The Cardinal's Guards

Cardinal Richelieu heads this squadron of men, who protect not only His Eminence but also serve as the town and castle soldiers. The tunic is much like the Musketeers' own, but in a brilliant red color. These men, for the most part, are a bit more stern and serious in their duties. However, don't feel restricted to that persona. They're all individuals, varying in temper and goals. The Cardinal's Guards usually take their rest and drink at Le Faucon Rouge.

The Fleurs

A new band of swashbucklers, very much akin to the Amazonian women. Luna Vinzinni is determined to make a place for women in society, much to the disgrace of most of the public. When you first join, there is no uniform. Luna has the applicant steal one from either a Musketeer or a Cardinalite. After which, it is tailored and dyed to the woman's tastes. The tavern of choice is L'Iris Violet.

The Others

Because there are so many roles to be considered here, I won't even begin to explain them all. The neutral tavern, however, is La Vache Qui Rit. Comfortable, cozy, and good for warring members to meet on safe ground.

The Villains

These can be some of the most interesting and enjoyable characters to play. They have a motive...a dark one. Just because they're the 'bad guy' doesn't mean they think of themselves as such. They could feel completely justified in doing what they do. It is their birthright, if they are noble. It's a duty to God, if theology is their driving purpose. The things that make these dark people who they are is up to you, and I highly recommend taking one on. To make it even more fun, select a PC or NPC that your villain would pay particular attention to, for whatever reason. Just make sure that your "adversary" knows that you're going to cause trouble for them before you randomly select a target in that manner. NPC's, well, have a party causing them problems, it makes for good plot development, and usually they'll seek a champion or protector of sorts. There's too much information here to really get into, so if you have questions, please e-mail me! The villains typically take their respite at Bloody Jack's, a seedier tavern close to the waterfront.
