Cirrus: >5000 m. Verzadigde luchtmassa's die afkoelen tot ijskristallen
Cirrocumulus: > 5000 m. Verzadiging luchtmassa's met onstabiliteit.
Cirrostratus: 6000 - 8000 m. Verzadiging luchtmassa op grote hoogte. Wordt de bewolking dikker dan nadert een frontaal systeem.
Altocumulus: 2000 - 5000 m. Optilling luchtmassa's en condensatie.
Altostratus: 2000 - 5000 m. Optilling van een grote luchtmassa en condensatie.
Cumulonimbus: 900 m. tot meer dan 10 km. (in de tropen) Krachtige convectie.
Cumulus: 600 - 6000 m. Convectie, versterkt door instabiliteit atmosfeer.
Stratocumulus: 600 - 2000 m. Opstijging grote luchtmassa bij zwakke stabiliteit.
Stratus: 0 - 2000 m. Opstijging van grote luchtmassa met condensatie. Neerslag veroorzakende stratus wordt nimbostratus genoemd.
Mist: 0 - 300 m. Condensatie door afkoeling aan de grond.
Zonsop- en ondergang. Breking van (wit) zonlicht door vervuiling, stof en vocht in de dampkring geeft rode verkleuring bij met name zonsondergang.
Halo's en regenbogen. Wit zonlicht gebroken of afgebogen door transparante stof zoals water of ijs geeft de mooiste optische effecten.
Onweer: een krachtige electrische ontlading tussen twee wolken of tussen wolk en aarde ontstaan door krachtige convectie bij zeer onstabiele lucht.
Poollicht ofwel noorderlicht ofwel Aurora Borealis (op het zuidelijk halfrond Aurora Australis) wordt veroorzaakt door de zonnewind. Het is een uitbarsting van electrisch geladen deeltjes die door het aardmagnetisch veld worden opgevangen
