The Ambassador-class starship was designed in the early 24th century as a replacement for the aging Excelsior-class. It was a large leap forward for starfleet. This vessel was the first to show the phaser arrays now typical in most starfleet vessels. It was the largest starship of the Federation, and it relegated the Excelsior of being the backbone of the fleet. It was Starfleet's workhorse until the larger, more powerful, and more advanced Galaxy-class entered service in the 2360's.
