Alanna: Alanna of Trebond.  She disguised herself as a boy in order to become a knight.  The prince's squire. Jonathan: Jonathan of Conte.  Heir to the throne and Alanna's knight and friend. George: The King of Thieves.  The Rogue.  Friend of Alanna's. Thom: Alanna's twin brother and powerful socerer. Myles: Alanna's teacher and friend.  Also the court drunk. Faithful: Alanna's pet cat.  He can talk to whomever he wishes, and they only understand him when he wants them to. Roger: Jonathan's uncle.  A powerful socerer and Alanna's enemy.

The Immortals

Daine: A girl with wild magic.  She has the ability to communicate with animals, among other things. Numair: Daine's teacher and friend.  A very powerful mage. Cloud: Daine's mare, and all that is left of her family. Badger: A god of sorts, who keeps his eye on Daine, helping her out. Sarri: Daine's dead mother.  She was killed by bandits before she could tell Daine who her father was. Ozorne: Emperor of Carthak. Kitten: The dragon kit Daine takes care of.

Protector of the Small

Kel: The first girl to follow in Alanna's footsteps to try to be a knight. Neal: Kel's close friend.  Fellow page/squire/knight.
