Which Is The Real Kimba?

Due to a series of legal problems, Kimba, the White Lion, has had numerous enumerations. Fred Patten tracks them all down for us and discusses the latest release — the truly original, much loved 1966 television series in the June 2000 issue of Animation World Magazine:

'Astro Boy' animator's cartoons to appear online

Animation by late cartoonist Osamu Tezuka, creator of "Kimba, the White Lion" and "Astro Boy," will be made available on the Internet, according to Tezuka Production Co. officials.

The company and Contents Japan, an Osaka-based Internet production firm, have established a Web site to this end.

Starting in August, "Blackjack," a dark series featuring a deformed genius doctor, will be shown on the Web site www.tezuka.co.jp/bj/

The cartoons will be updated for the Internet, based on Tezuka's originals. With a click of the mouse, the characters will move, the officials said.

Pop singer and songwriter Hikaru Utada will supply the vocal content for "Blackjack," of which she is reportedly a big fan.

Two episodes of the story will be shown every month, and customers are expected to pay 600 yen in monthly membership fees through providers.

The companies plan to run Tezuka's works in English in the future, but initially they will run only in Japanese.

I still plan on adding quite a bit more new multimedia from several first season episodes; and also a little more from season two. The ONE (Kimba second season) "Le Roi Leo" episode we have, "La Taniere," is in French, and features a grown up Leo (Kimba), his mate, and their cubs.  Both the opening and closing theme songs are much different than the American "Kimba" theme we all know and love!   If you have RealPlayer, check them out on the sounds, which I really should rename: "sounds/video," page!

You may have noticed that this 'page' has sort of become a full-fledged 'site,' which was not my original intention. This change of mind decision is the direct result of:

1. Reading all the great e-mail the Kimba page got; and

2. I just LOVE that little, white, hero lion!

Our personal collections will be running dry pretty quickly however, so contributions of episodes, art (commercially-produced and/or fan-generated), or *whatever* will be gratefully accepted! ;-)

If you noticed the subtitle on the above banner, let me explain. My roomie and I are HUGE Disney fans and The Lion King was a particular fave. But we were really bothered by Michael Eisner's statement that TLK was a completely original story... anyone who's seen Kimba knows this can't be true. We'll be posting a comparison page soon! Aside from the obvious Kimba/Simba names, wise baboon and talkative bird, the storyline is similar in many ways, too.

I'd like to thank my good friend, Paul, for inspiring the idea of using horizontal frames, instead of vertical ones. I'd also like to thank my roomie for letting me scan her Kimba collectibles and for helping me make multimedia from our little Kimba videotape collections.

This site is designed for 800X600 screen resoluton (24 bit color or better) and best viewed with your browser window maximized.
