In the Highlands of Beleriand lies Dorthonion, and held within its borders are the strong and steadfast kin of Beor the Old. In this, the First Age, the Secondborn of the First House are a nomadic and loyal people, fiercely defending their land against the horrors of Morgoth, the Dark Enemy. But also a gentle people, they lead simple lives during times of peace. Eager to learn, cunning-handed, swift in understanding, long in memory and moved sooner to pity than laughter. Hardy and courageous, they are faithful to the land which became their home. Standing against the forces of dark that stretch their hands from the north and lurk in the mountains to the south, they are determined not to let the land of Dorthonion to fall to them. The people of Dorthonion believe in the bond between them and the land. Very loathe they are, indeed, to leave it at the hour of great need, even be it an army of thousands of thousands coming to take it from them. (Compare with the band of outcasts headed by Barahir in the Silmarillion.)
