How I Ended up in Hawaii

I have lived in Hawaii since August 25, 1991. People often ask how I, a girl born in Missouri and raised in Oregon, ended up in Paradise. Well, here's the story...

My mom is a special education teacher. In the early 1990s Oregon made cut backs in education and my mom lost her job. She tried to find other work but it was hard because the whole state was on a tight budget.

One day she saw an ad in one of her teacher magazines. It said that Hawaii really needed special education teachers. So my mom sent in an application. It was kind of a joke in the family. We were all surprised when she was offered a full time job at any school, on any island of her choice.

After a lot of talking she decided to accept the job. She chose Hilo, on the Big Island and my mom, my sister, and I packed up and moved all the way across the ocean. We have lived there ever since.
