STINGRAY

W.A.S.P. (World Aquanaut Security Patrol)

STANDBY FOR ACTION!

These three words would be heard at the beginning of every episode, followed by the thunderous drumbeats and trumpets. Then you would be sent into action for the next 30 minutes with Troy Tempest and "Phones" as they patrolled the ocean looking for adventure.

STINGRAY was created in 1964 by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, with special effects by Derek Meddings and Reg Hill. The show was created by using marionettes, not to be confused with puppets which are operated by a human hand being inserted into the character. Marionnettes are controlled by strings from above the stage. The show featured many fantastic models and special effects.

The main Characters of the show were:

The Stingray submarines, there were more than one in the W.A.S.P. fleet, were launched from beneath MARINEVILLE, a secret base with many hidden defenses. Some of those defenses include I.C.B.Missiles, jet fighter squadrons, and various patrol craft. The Stingray submarine's main enemy is the TERROR FISH, a large mechanical fish, which is capable of firing different weapons such as torpedos and missiles.

There were a total of 39 episodes in all. Stingray remains as one of the favorites in a great line up of shows by the Andersons.

DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that most of the underwater scenes were shot by using the models on strings behind a fish tank, while the camera filmed through the tank from the front!
