The Adventures of Goldfish and Geneva

The End
(Farewell to X-Wars)

The avatarr had been travelling through the universe for a while when he realised where he was.
~Now I haven't been here in several million years~ he thought to himself. ~I remember when all this place was just volcanic rocks and now look at it. Teaming with life. Humanoid life. How interesting. I'll take a closer look at this place.~ He turned himself invisible to the human mind and descended on the planet. He looked about and turned  his cosmic senses on the planet and learnt the history of it's evolution. What it was, is and will be. He was very impressed by what he saw. The planet showed potential to be a spearhead in the universe, a place where legends were made. There was however a discrepancy - how had this all occured? There had been no trace of such an event when he had last visited. He checked its place in the universe and made sure that it had, at the moment, no influence on the cosmic balance. But the discrepancy was worrying. Then he heard a calling.

Avatarr. It is I, Lord Chaos. Why are you examining the third planet of Sol?
My Lord, it is a place of great potential. The cosmic balance demands it be examined and so it bears no threat to the multiverse, as there appears to be a problem
Avatarr, this is Master Order. Carry out your examination of the planet. If we require your services we shall contact you
Yes, sir. My Lord

The voices in his mind fell silent and the avatarr went about his business. He was to serve them and that was his all. Good and evil meant nothing to him. Time was an abstract term. Preserving the cosmic balance was his job and he so he remained impartial in all things. Then his senses were spiked. He felt something he had not felt since the dawn of creation. He turned his senses on the point of its origin and determined it came from the planet he was on. He decided to investigate and was at it's point of origin instantly. He was amazed by what he saw. In front of him was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen in his life - and he had seen many beautiful women on many different planets over many millions of years. He froze the timestream and examined her in great detail. She was a beautiful woman, with a great potential in her for genetic superiority but none of that mattered to him. He smiled as he realised that he was in love.
~So much for being impartial~ he thought. Then he thought again. If he appeared to her as he was she would not be able to take the sight, and she would go mad. That would not do at all so he would have to take a mortal form, whilst he was here. He looked in to her mind to find the image of the man of her dreams and created a body based on what he saw. He looked about. She was in what was referred to as a park. The lake beside her was teaming with life and at her side was an ice cream seller. As far as he could tell she was alone, and she was also without a mate. ~Not a mate~ he thought to himself. ~A partner~ He looked in to the minds of every being on the planet. They were all unique, but the cultures were all similar. He had a body, he had an idea of how to go about what he was about to now all he needed was a name. ~It'll come to me~ he thought. He created a chair out of the air, with a popular book of the time which happened to be her favourite. Now all he had to do was take his position and restart time. He felt nervous, but pushed the thoughts out of his head. Time restarted and things had to take place as he needed them to, but being a being of cosmic powers this was not difficult. Most of the people in the area had the sudden urge to leave the place and did so. The avatarr smiled. He enjoyed using his powers, but he would give them up for her, if he had to.
"Good" he said to himself, and then realising that his voice had a slight echo to it, he said it again, without the echo. She was walking towards him now so all it needed was a little tweak of the gravitational forces about her. He did so which caused to slip and fall but due to the avatarr being in charge of the whole situation, she was not hurt. He raced over to her. "Ma'am, are you all right?" he said.
"Yes," she replied looking up at him. "I'm ....fine." She stared at him intently. She was still staring at him as he helped her up. "Have we met before?" she asked. "You seem so familiar to me."
"Perhaps, once upon a dream," he said, as he had taken his form from her dreams.
"Oh, you're a poet?" she exclaimed. "I love poetry!" He smiled, and froze time again. ~I need something insightful yet poetic.~ Then he thought of something, and restarted time. "From the stars that collide in the heavens, To the blossom grows on the trees. I have travelled from afar and have seen them all, But your beauty is above of all of these."
"Thank you, sir," she said, blushing slightly. "You don't hesitate with words."
"I speak the truth, or at least what I see as the truth. Please sit down," he indicated to the chair.
"Why thank you, Mr..." He froze time again to give himself time to think. He looked about. It was crunch time. On the ice cream sellers cart it said David's Ices. Hmm, he thought. A good first name, he decided. David. Yes, he liked that. But what of a last name. Nothing grandiose, he decided, but nothing too lowly. He needed something that would make an impact and be easily recognised. He wandered over to the lake side. He had been through everything in the universe that he knew about. He looked at his reflection in the water for guidance. It gave him the answer he was after. In the water he could see two eyes looking at him. He could see an elegant creature, which had no ties to anything or anyone. He looked in to its mind and decided that it's name would be perfect. He went back to the seat and started time again.
"Goldfish. David Goldfish."
"Well, Mr Goldfish, my name is Josephine. Josephine Geneva." She smiled at him. He smiled back. He looked in to her with his cosmic senses and smiled again. She was falling in love with him.
"May I buy you an ice cream?" he asked.
"Why, thank you," she said. 'David' was pleased. He could feel that being in love with her would cause trouble with his superiors, but right at that moment, he couldn't care less...

Then it hit him, and hit him hard. The future roled in to his sight, how Jo would be captured by Mephisto, how they would be reborn in the future as mortals and how things would turn out. It was a disaster and he froze time once more.
~No~ he whispered. ~It cannot happen, must not happen like that~ All that would happen to him and those he cared about in a war between super powered beings would never occur. He would abandon this Goldfish identity and leave Earth forver. Yet how could he leave her? ~Help me~ he cried to the forces of the universe and was surprised by the being who answered. ~Eternity?~
Calm youself, avatarrsaid the embodiment of the universe. You have finally found the truth about yourself. You must choose either to leave the woman or that future you saw
~I choose neither~ said the avatarr. ~There is a third choice, and I will make it~ He used his powers to alter reality on a fundemental level, making Jo a cosmic being on equal status with him. Eternity smiled.
And so that future is erased. Well done, avatarr. And welcome overseer
~Thank you, sir~ said the being who had been Jo. Her new found powers told her what had happened to her and she found she did indeed love the avatarr. She took what was percieved to be his hand and they lived together in happiness until the end of time.

The future shook with the ramifications. The false Eternity had played his hand and smiled as he returned to the future he had come from. He had done what everyone else had not been able to. He had defeated Dave Goldfish. He smiled as the master congratulated him on a job well done. He returned to his office and looked at the monitors and his face fell. Goldfish lived.
"How is this possible?" he said. Even Goldfish and his immunity to paradox shouldn't have protected him. Time had been altered ata fundamental level. This was a Dave Goldfish who had never taken part in the X-Wars, his actions had never taken place. But there was no Andromeda. Network was much more organised. The X-Wars were not in the public view and neither was Dave Goldfish and his organisation. Did Goldfish know the truth, and if not how long before he found it? He no longer had any access to his cosmic powers or to any force of the universe at all. It was all a matter of time before the future would be revealed....
