The Firehawks and the Phoenixes are the guardians of earth,
and this is the story of how they came to be thus.
When the Earth was young, an unholy gathering of all manner
of evil beings came to pillage the planet and strip it bare
of life, leaving it empty for their own devious purposes.
They killed all living things unlucky enough to cross their
path, and feasted upon their very souls. The humans, who
had been given dominion over the Earth, were powerless to
stop this legion of malevolence. And so they prayed to
their gods, begging them for their intervention. And so it
came to pass that the Creator, the One Above All, summoned
the Elemental Dragons and sent them forth to protect his
children.
These Dragons controlled the forces of Nature itself. The
element of Earth governed the North; its Dragon ruler was Grael. The element of Fire governed
the South; its Dragon ruler was Fafnir. The element of Air governed the
East; its Dragon ruler was
Sairys.
The element of Water governed the West; its Dragon ruler
was Naelyan. The Dragons focused
their powers into four gemstones, and scoured the earth in
search of human warriors worthy enough to possess them.
Eventually, two men and two women were chosen, and from
that point on, it was always to be thus.
The four
gemstones, each containing a fragment of the essence of the
Dragons, were placed in the very hearts of the four humans.
The men beacame known as the Firehawks, and were given the
powers of Earth and Fire. The women became known as the
Phoenixes, and were given the powers of Air and Water.
These warriors would forever tread upon the edge of the
Abyss, but would never falter from the course of good. This
would make them unpredictable to the forces of darkness.
And so it came to
be that these four became the Guardians of the Earth.
Soon after, a great war was fought with the Dragons and
their four chosen warriors fighting side by side against
the dark horde that ravaged the planet, and the forces of
good eventually triumphed. Unable to completely destroy
the legion of evil, they managed trap them in a Gateway
between worlds.
This Gate
required massive amounts of energy and concentration to
construct, and the Dragons themselves were forever bound to
the Key, which was in orbit high above the planet, between
it and the Moon. The Gate was not without flaws, and from
time to time, something would manage to slip out through
the cracks and wreak havoc upon the Earth. The Guardians
maintained a constant vigil against such escapes, and saw
to the destruction of such beings. The time of the Gate's
greatest weakness was during a lunar eclipse that occurred
once every millenium. During this time all four Guardians
would have to travel to the Key and reseal the gate, or the
evil horde would be free once again, and would plunge the
Earth into an eternity of darkness.
These warriors, these avatars of the forces of nature, walk
in secret among us, fighting battle after battle about
which the majority of humankind will (and should) never
know. The Guardians have a kind of immortality due to the
gemstones; they do not age and are stronger and faster than
normal people. They can only die if they are beheaded and
their heart is ripped from their chest and the stone
removed.
Sometimes, down through history, a Guardian would fall, and
others would be called upon to replace them. Such
