Personal thoughts: Posted 5 April 2004

First question is should we keep McKenzie or let him go? I say we should let him go and draft a new OT & OG this year. There have been talk of package deals for Oakland to get their #2 overall pick. That would be the best senario, but I wouldn't draft Gallery if he is there at #2, I would trade down and stack up more picks. Gallery would cost as much or more than McKenzie to sign and we are just seeing some daylight with the cap mess. People say there is no OL depth in the draft, but if you look hard you can see second day talent ripe for the picking. We can't afford to keep McKenzie and a draft pick would only cost a small fraction of the cost it will take to keep him. My sleeper pick for offensive linemen is Trevor Hutton. He is a OG out of Utah State. He stands only 6'2" but weighs 305 and can run the 40 in only 4.85 seconds. We have four 7th round picks and if this guy is still around we need to grab him up.

The second topic is whether we need another WR? I don't feel the Jets need a WR and surely to draft one at #12 would be foolish, but with that being said, I would take Roy Williams, Mike Williams, or Larry Fitzgerald if they are there at #12. I might even consider Reggie Williams, some say he is better then Roy or Mike. These guys are big and talented, and we would be lucky to have them, but my first concern in the draft would be CB. DeAngelo Hall is rated the best CB in the draft and he is one of the tiop five atheletes in the draft. If we are looking to fill a hole or draft the best player available at #12 this guy fills both bills. At 5'10' and a solid 200 lbs he is average sized, but his quickness and speed are way above average. We have been missing something since Glenn was sent packing, but Hall would give it back.

Here is my list of the true gems in the draft that could be had cheap. They all could not only be there in the third round for us to pick (since we through away our 2nd round pick), but they would be steals.

Stuart Schweigert F 6-2, 218 4.45 Purdue

Joey Thomas CB 6-1, 195 4.42 Montana State

Demorrio Williams LB 6-1, 232 4.50 Nebraska

Isaac Hilton LB 6-3, 267 4.50 Hampton

This is a guard I would love to get if we go OL in the 3rd:

Sean Locklear OG 6-4, 308 5.10 North Carolina State

Here is a 7th round steal at OG: (The Jets get lucky at picking OL in the later rounds.)

Trevor Hutton OG 6-2, 305 4.85 Utah State

Everyone knows we have a lot of UFAs come next year and the best thing to do with a guy you don't plan to resign is trade. Jordan wants to be a starter and feels that he should be and paid as one. Betch has been a disappointment and we have Baker to replace him. We need to trade both Becht and Jordan for the most we can get. We will never get back a 1st rounder for Becht or even the 2nd rounder for Jordan, but maybe we could get a 3rd rounder for each. There will still be very good OL and LB left come the third round. We will either loss then next year for free or be forced to overpay them, and we can't afford either, so trade then while we can.

Check out some of these other pages I have. I'll be updating most of them in the near future, along with posting my 2004 mock draft.
