Helicopter Operations

As with Fixed wing aircraft operations, Mil-Air Rotary wing; 'Aucon' Squadron deals with all military related helicopter assistance flights. Traditional military helicopters as well as some special purpose equipment have been evaluated and deployed with the squad.

There is no pre-set mission schedule for helicopter operations. Rotary Wing Command [RWC] plans and allocates helicopter missions in accordance with requirements of the clients. Pilots are allowed to plan and submit their own helicopter missions for approval. R-W missions are identified with letter 'H'. Before requesting R-W missions pilots should complete a SCF for each helicopter type that they wish to operate.

For away from base deployments, RWC will co-ordinate with Global Missions Command to arrange Mil-Air's heavy-lift aircraft such as C-17, C-141 and C-5A for transportation of helicopter. GMC will assign a Mil-Air Fixed wing aircraft pilot (or the same helicopter pilot if he/she is type rated to operate the required heavy lift aircraft) to operate these special Global missions. When helicopter is arrived at required location, helicopter pilot should accomplish the Rotary wing part of the mission. When completed, helicopter will be transported back to its home base using a heavy-lift aircraft. Efficient team work involving both Fixed wing and Rotary wing pilots is the prime factor in this concept.

MISSION EXAMPLE

Rotary Wing Mission # : H808 Helicopter Type : Sikorsky S-61N

Assigned to Pilot # : MA00A

Mission Details : Sikorsky S-61N is required for a counter intelligence mission.

Area of Operation : Red Sea, Middle East.

GMC Instructions : Fixed wing pilot MA00B to operate Global Mission # GM607 FAR > Cairo, and GM607A Cairo > FAR. Aircraft C-17.

[Note: If MA00A is C-17 type rated he/she can operate GM607/607A]

RWC Instructions : Rotary wing pilot MA00A to depart from Cairo for mission H808. Return to Cairo when completed.

At the end of the assignment separate Completed Mission Reports should be submitted for missions GM607/607A and H808 by the pilot(s).

NOTE:

• Pilots can use helicopters from Mil-Air hangar or other similar helicopter model and should state that in the mission report.
• You can submit your own missions. Please provide details. Refer the sample, above.
• If the assistance of a heavy-lift aircraft is required GMC will arrange it and inform you.
• When selecting a helicopter / mission combination consider the suitability of that helicopter to the mission profile.

Rotary Wing Hangars

• Bell AH-1S Huey Cobra : The Cobra was the world's first helicopter specifically designed as an armed helicopter for direct fire support/attack role. Although it's predecessor, the UH-1 (Huey) had been modified to the armed helicopter role, despite a compromise in performance. Rotor Span: 44', Max Weight: 10000lb, Cruise Speed: 123kt, Range: 275nm, Power: One 1800shp Textron Lycoming T53-L-703 driving 2 blade main and tail rotors.
• Bell UH1-N US Marine Corps : Developed from the UH1 models A through K, the UH1-N differs primarily in having a twin power plant which consists of 2 turboshaft engines coupled to a combining gearbox with a single output shaft. As a result, all versions of model UH1-N can carry an external load of 4400lb and still maintain cruise performance on one engine component at maximum gross weight. Rotor Span: 48' 2.5", Max Weight: 11200lb, Cruise Speed: 111kt, Range: 243nm, Power: 1800shp P&W Twin pack PT6T-3 driving 2 blade main and tail rotors.
• Boeing/MD AH-64 Longbow Apache : This attack helicopter design features crew armour, aerobatic capability and nose mounted Lockheed Martin TADS (comprises a FLIR, TV camera, Laser spot tracker and laser rangefinder/designator). It has a 30mm cannon with 1200 rounds. Four under wing hard points can carry up to 16 AGM Hellfire missiles, Stinger or Sidewinder AAMs, or Sidearm anti radiation missiles. Rotor Span: 48', Max Weight: 21000lb, Max Speed: 158kt, Range: 260nm, Power: Two 1890shp GE T700-GE-701C turboshafts driving 4 main and tail rotors.
• Bell 412 : This battle field and utility helicopter is the ultimate development of the worlds most successful helicopter series - Bell 204, 205 and 212. It can carry up to 14 troops. Rotor Span: 46', Cruise Speed: 130kt, Max Weight: 11900lb, Range: 402nm, Power: 1910shp P & W PT6T-3D Twin-Pac driving 4 blade main and 2 blade tail rotors.
• Eurocopter BK-117 : Developed jointly by MBB (rotor, tail unit, hydraulics and power systems) and Kawasaki (fuselage, transmission and undercarriage). It can carry up to 10 passengers or can be armed with 8 HOT-2 or 4 TOW anti tank missiles. Rotor Span: 36.09ft, Max Weight: 7385lb, Cruise Speed: 134kts, Range: 381nm, Power: Two 550shp Textron Lycoming LTS 101-750B-1 turboshafts driving 4 blade main and 2 blade tail rotors.
• Westland Lynx AH-7 : This is one of the few truly all British designed choppers that was manufactured mainly in Britain though the French built about 30% of them. It can be equipped with a number of weapons though the standard setup has the TOW (Tube launched, Optically tracked, Wire guided) rockets. The co-pilot uses the roof-mounted sight for target acquisition. When not armed with the rockets they are generally equipped with door gunners and can hold up to 9 passengers for the troop deployment role. Rotor Span: 42', Cruise Speed: 138kts, Max Weight: 11300lb, Range: 320nm, Power: Two RR Gem 42-1 turboshafts driving 4 blade main and tail rotors.
• Aerospatiale SA365n Dauphin : With enlarged tail surfaces, revised transmissions and main rotor, new rotor mast fairing and retractable landing gears, this multi-role helicopter can carry up to 10 passengers. It can be armed with 2 rocket packs, or 20mm gun pods, or up to 8 AAMs. Rotor Span: 39' 2", Max Weight: 9040lb, Cruise Speed: 150kts, Range: 443nm, Power: Two 710shp Turbomeca Arriel 1c turboshafts driving 4 blade main rotor and Fenestron shrouded tail rotor.
• Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk : With excellent speed and hot and high performances, UH-60 can carry up to 14 troops. It has two mounts for mini-guns. Four external hard point support system can carry fuel or Hellfire anti armour missiles and rockets. Rotor Span: 53' 8", Max Weight: 20000lb, Cruise Speed: 140kt, Range: 319nm, Power: Two 1560shp GE T700-GE-700 turboshafts driving 4 blade main and tail rotors.

• AS 532 Cougar MKII : The Cougar is the new (stretched and re-engined) military version of the Eurocopter Super Puma. This multirole medium lift helicopter can carry up to 29 troops or 14 stretchers. Rotor span: 53' 3'', Cruise Speed: 147kts, Range: 635nm, Max Weight: 21495lb, Power: Two 1845shp TM Makila 1A2 turboshafts driving 4 blade main and tail rotors.

• Sikorsky S-64 SkyCrane : Skycrane is certainly one of the most dramatically shaped aircraft ever made. Its unique design features a skeletal fuselage on very high wheel legs. Furthermore, it has a fully functional, aft facing glass cabin. Interchangeable pods allow it to be used for a variety of functions. Rotor span: 72ft, Gross Weight: 42000lb, Engines: Two 4500shp PW JFTD12-4A turboshafts driving 6 blade main rotor.

   

• Sikorsky S-61 Pelican : (Canadian Coast Guard) ASW, SAR and utility maritime helicopter. Can carry up to 15 in main cabin. The stretched S-61R (CH-3C) was specially developed for USAF. Max external ordnance of 840lb typically comprises 2 torpedoes. Rotor span: 62', Cruise speed: 118kt, Range: 542nm, Max Weight: 21000lb, Power: Two 1590shp GE T58 turboshafts driving 5 blade main and tail rotors.

   

• Mi-24 Hind D : Russian attack/transport Helicopter, with definitive stepped and armoured cockpits. It has a 4 barrel 12.7mm machine gun in an undernose turret plus missile guidance and electro optical pods. Rotor span: 56' 9", Max Weight: 26455lb, Cruise Speed: 145kts, Service Ceiling: 14000ft, Range: 270nm, Power: Two 2190shp Kilmov TV3-117 turboshafts driving 5 blade main and 3 blade tail rotors.

• Sikorsky VH-3 (S-61) - Marine One : It is used primarily for transport of the U.S. President. Rotor span: 62', Cruise speed: 118kt, Range: 542nm, Max Weight: 21000lb, Power: Two 1590shp GE T58 turboshafts driving 5 blade main and tail rotors.

• Boeing Vertol CH-47 Chinook : This machine acquired a special camouflage scheme for operations at night during the Gulf War. It has NVG compatible flight deck and triple external cargo hooks. It can carry up to 44 troops or 24 casualty litters. Rotor span: 60' each, Max Weight: 54000lb, Cruise Speed: 156kt, Range: 230nm, Power: Two 3750shp Allied Signal T55-L-712 turboshafts driving two 3 blade rotors.

• Bell-Boeing MV22 Osprey : The acquisition of this medium lift tiltrotor VSTOL aircraft represents a revolutionary leap in our ability to transport forces. The V-22 will fly twice as fast, several times further, and with a heavier payload than the helicopters it replaces; it is the key to execution of warfare manoeuvers. A tilt-rotor combines the speed, range and fuel efficiency normally associated with turboprop aircraft with the vertical take-off/landing and hover capabilities of helicopters. The V-22 is being developed to perform USMC, USN, and United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) missions for the year 2001 and beyond. Rotor span: 11.58m each, Crew: 2 + 1 (loadmaster), Troops: 24 - 31, Max. T-O weight: 60500lb, Max. Speed: 275kts, Range: 1200-1800nm, Power: Two 6150 shp Allison T406-AD-400 turboshafts driving 3 blade proprotors.
